«Breaking News» The new girls were humiliated by the dullest idiots on Made In Chelsea, by JIM SHELLEY

Made In Chelsea returned and started its seventeenth series with something none of us expected to see.

No. Not a new character who was black or Asian.

Not that radical.

Nor anyone else who’d represent the diversity of modern-day London.

Just two of its stars discussing Epigenetics!

Almost as surprising, right?

Particularly as they weren’t Mark-Francis Vandelli and Victoria Fashion-Cadaver, the only cast members who’d read more books with words than pictures.

The fact that the pair discussing attending an Epigenetics lecture were Alex Mytton and Jamie Laing illustrated how MiC had decided to try and revive its fading brand by taking the show in a completely different direction: by making it more intelligent.

Well, by introducing seven new characters that added intelligence at least.

Not difficult admittedly (one of them wasn’t even blonde - another big step forward for the show).

Rosi Mai Walden, for example, had done History of Art at the Courtauld and now moved on to law.

Amelia Miss might have sounded like a femme fatale in a Martin Amis novel but she went to Richmond, the American International University in London, and Eliza Batten studied Anthropology at Durham.

Maeva D’Ascanio meanwhile was French – so inherently an intellectual/existentialist.

Sadly for reasons best known to itself, Episode One of Season 17 still showed four of the debutantes (Maeva, Eliza, Amelia, and Verity Bowditch) being roundly humiliated. And by two of MiC’s dullest, dumbest, idiots too (James Taylor and Miles Nazaire).

Verity had a Biomedical Science degree from King’s College London, not to mention a keen interest in Epigenetics, judging by her presence at the lecture in Belgravia’s Caledonian Club.

It seemed the days of Louise Thompson and Stephanie Whatever-Her-Name-Was messing about doing ‘Doga’ (yoga for dogs) were long gone when Verity asked the genetics expert: ‘Is there a difference between the effect of DNA methylation and histone methylation?’

Scorned: Verity didn’t realise her ‘boyfrend’ James Taylor was cheating on her either - by taking Eliza Batten to Paris

The fact that she had such a basic gap in her knowledge was just the first sign that academic intelligence didn’t preclude the same old MiC stories.

Verity didn’t realise her ‘boyfrend’ James Taylor was cheating on her either - by taking Eliza Batten to Paris.

This was despite the fact he’d posted photos of the date on Instagram, and it was in the script.

Luckily for Verity, by pure coincidence, Jamie and Mytton happened to be attending the lecture and were able to tell her.

Eliza for her part inevitably didn’t know James was going out Verity or that, despite maintaining their date was unprecedented, he had taken Verity up the Eiffel Tower too.

Amelia and Maeva also suffered the ignominy of finding out Miles had been playing them off against each other (as it were).

Maeva was the latest in a long line of MiC characters that had moved to London in order to break up with someone she was not really going out with.

‘It’s good to see you,’ she said when they were ‘re-united’ for a meal that never came.

Awkward: Eliza for her part inevitably didn’t know James was going out Verity or that, despite maintaining their date was unprecedented, he had taken Verity up the Eiffel Tower too

‘Yeah I know!’ grinned Miles as if he were 12, before bursting out laughing when she asked: ‘have you been a good boy?’

It was not what you’d call a great sign. Gradually, as she heard Miles’ lies about Amelia, Maeva realised: ‘I think I care more about you than you care about me! You can see that our relationship does not properly exist!’

The silly posh English boy continued to snub the European’s desperate entreaties for some sign of commitment.

Maeva and Miles were basically Made In Chelsea’s perfect metaphor for Brexit.

These were the highlights from Season 17 Episode One

BEST TRADITIONAL GREETING

‘Waddup !’

- Jamie Laing opens the show with the word that MiC cast members have used through the ages (17 series although it feels like 117)

WORST TRADITIONAL MIC EUPHEMISM

‘Was there any bonking?’

- Angus wastes no time (one minute) before using the hideously dated term that you only ever hear on this show

BEST MINOR DETAIL

‘At school I was distracted by girls.’

‘You went to an all-boys school!’

- Alex Mytton points out the inconvenient truth to Jamie Laing

WORST CAREER-ENDING EMBARRASSMENT

‘Thank you very much for having me here today to talk about Epigenetics. The first question is obviously: what is Epigenetics?’

- DNA expert/lecturer at The Caledonian Club, when the real first question was: what the **** are you doing appearing on Made In Chelsea?

BIGGEST WASTE OF A PRIVATE EDUCATION

‘You never fail to amaze me! What is this?!’

- James shows he is easily amazed until Eliza informs him: ‘it’s a scooter’

MOST MELODRAMMATIC EXAGGERATION

‘It ended brutally’

- Amelia’s term for the way Miles eventually stopped replying to her texts

MOST SINISTER PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE USE OF THE THIRD PERSON

‘It was tough at the time but we’re over it’

- Amelia ‘reassures’ Miles she’s forgiven him but might still break in and stab him in his bed

LEAST DIPLOMATIC CONFESSION

‘Are you a game-player?’

‘I think it’s unfortunate in this day and age the way you’re a game player with people you don’t like. If I don’t like someone, I’ll lead them on!’

- James gets his date in Paris with Eliza off to a great start

MOST APPROPRIATE VENUE

‘Tramp’

- the nightclub for Sophie’s birthday party

MOST SCATHING COMPLIMENT

‘She is so sweet’

- Habbs immediately realises that Maeva is now the most glamorous super-fox on the show

LEAST SCATHNG INSULT

‘You called her after Paris! That is so s**t. That was a really special day for me. Then you’ve just gone and done a poo on it!’

- Eliza’s ‘savage’ denunciation of James

MOST ACCURATE ADMISSION (male)

‘I like you so why do you keep stringing me along!?’

‘Cos it’s easy!’

- James breaks it to Verity not-very-gently

MOST APPROPRIATE ADMISSION (female)

‘I’m sure you can understand I feel a bit of an idiot’

- Eliza realises you has joined the right show

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
