«Breaking News» Experts reveal you should change pillows every three years and how to tell if you need new ones

If you find yourself regularly tossing and turning and all the old tricks, such as cutting out caffeine haven't helped, it could be that your pillow is to blame.

According to sleep experts, pillows should be replaced every three years to ensure they're giving you the correct support.

And while every person may want something different from their pillow, various sleep positions may lend themselves to different types and firmness.

Over time with use, pillows will become firmer, and lose 'loft' as they flatten and become less comfortable and supportive.

Speaking to Femail to coincide with Tielle Love Luxury's pillow swap programme, sleep experts have revealed the two key tests that will show if it's time to trade in your old bedding.

THE SADDLEBAG TEST

Lay a pillow across your arm, and if it folds over like a saddle bag, then your pillow has reached the end of it's life.

THE PRESS TEST

This is the second method by which to tell if you need to invest in a new pillow.

To test the quality of your pillow, place it on a firm surface and press down in the centre.

A good quality pillow will 'loft' back into shape as soon as you lift your hand.

WHAT KIND OF PILLOW IS BEST FOR YOU?

While it is down to personal preference what kind of pillow a sleeper may want, there are some general rules of thumb which will tell you what may be best for your body.

BACK SLEEPER

For anyone who always sleeps on their back, they should opt for a soft pillow that won't throw the head too far forward or put stress on the neck.

Soft pillows are best for those sleeping on their back, as it provides good neck support while keeping the body aligned (stock image)

SIDE SLEEPER

A firm, high pillow is preferable for anyone who sleeps on their side.

This will help to keep the spine and neck aligned.

You can also suggest placing a pillow between your knees while you sleep can also prevent pain in the lower back.

FRONT SLEEPER

Sleepers who rest on their front may need a pillow that supports the neck and back, and therefore should invest in a soft pillow.

You might also want to tuck a pillow under your stomach to support your lower back.

YOU TOSS AND TURN

Many people sleep in different positions throughout the night, and therefore there is no perfect formula to choosing a pillow - but the best bet is likely to be a medium height pillow that offers support for side sleeping, and the shallowness needed for back sleeping.

To prolong the life of a pillow beyond three years, it's best to plump them up every day to fill them with air.

Meanwhile, those who sleep on their side should opt for a firmer pillow, which will support the neck and head (stock image)

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
