A demonstration tape of David Bowie singing Starman is up for auction after languishing in a loft for almost 50 years.

The song became one of Bowie’s most revered tracks after its release in 1972.

But the initial 1971 recording didn’t seem to impress musicians.

The star, then 24, can be heard telling guitarist Mick Ronson he has not finished singing when Ronson tries to end the recording.

Ronson, who died in 1993, gave musician friend Kevin Hutchinson the demo and he is selling it after finding it in his loft.

He said: ‘I remember thinking, this is OK. I didn’t think, this is fantastic...’

The tape – with an estimate of £10,000 – will be sold on March 12 by Omega Auctions.

Mr Hutchinson was handed the demo to help him learn the song in the hope it might help him snap-up his own contract as a singer-songwriter with Bowie's manager.

Kevin Hutchinson was given the tape by Mick Ronson in 1971 but it has since spent 50 years in his loft

He also penned a song for Bowie which he considered putting on the album.

The tape was retrieved from his loft after he watched a documentary about the star, who died in 2016.

Dan Hampson, assistant auction manager at Omega Auctions, said: 'In consultation with a Bowie expert, we can say with confidence that this tape contains a very early and possibly the first ever demo version of Starman.

'There's a lot of Bowie mythology around the writing of this timeless classic, and the raw and truly beautiful version heard here helps to provide a fascinating insight into the creative process of a bona fide genius.'

The tape also contains recordings of Bowie songs Moonage Daydream and Hang Onto Yourself.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
