«Breaking News» Catholic officials demand SNL apologize for 'disgraceful and offensive' joke about Catholic church

The Diocese of Brooklyn is demanding a public apology from Saturday Night Live over a joke that compared the Catholic church's sex abuse scandals to R. Kelly's.

The joke in question came during SNL's Weekend Update segment in which co-host Pete Davidson addressed the disgraced R&B star who is facing a number of counts of sexual abuse.

'Before I continue, this guy is a monster and he should go to jail forever,' Davidson said. 'But if you support the Catholic church, isn't that like the same thing as being an R. Kelly fan? I don't really see the difference, except for one's music is significantly better.'

'Look, I'm not saying it's an easy decision,' Davidson went on, 'I'm just saying, you don't know how good someone's music is until you find out they're a pedophile.'

Despite generating laughs and boos from the gathered audience, the Diocese of Brooklyn took umbrage declaring the subject to be no laughing matter, blasting the humor as 'disgraceful and offensive.'

'Apparently, the only acceptable bias these days is against the Catholic Church,' the diocese said in a lengthy statement. 'The faithful of our Church are disgusted by the harassment by those in news and entertainment, and this sketch offends millions. The mockery of this difficult time in the Church's history serves no purpose.'

'The clergy sex abuse crisis is shameful, and no one should ever get a laugh at the expense of the victims who have suffered irreparably. The Diocese of Brooklyn strives every day to ensure that sexual abuse by clergy never happens again,' the statement continued.

'It is likely that no other institution has done more than the Catholic Church to combat and prevent sexual abuse. The insensitivity of the writers, producers, and the cast of SNL around this painful subject is alarming,' the statement concluded.

The Catholic church has been inundated by numerous allegations of sexual abuse of underage victims at the hands of priests.

The Brooklyn diocese recently named more than 100 priests who have all been accused of sexual abuse against children.

R.Kelly, meanwhile has been charged with sexually abusing four women, including three who were minors at the time in a pattern of alleged abuse that appears to span decades.

The comparison of Kelly to the Catholic Church prompted a mixed reaction online.

'Sounds like if Pete Davidson can single out the Catholic Church, he should include colleges that have covered up pedophile coaches and the entire USA Gymnastics Team,' read one Twitter post. 'I don't appreciate my faith being compared to one predator just because Pete likes his music.'

'Pete Davidson's bit on Weekend Update is cringe-worthy — at best,' wrote another Twitter post.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
