«Breaking News» Almost 1,000 Network Rail staff cashing in on six figure salaries including a chief exec on £588,000

Almost 1,000 staff at Network Rail are paid more than £100,000 a year – as passengers endure the worst train services for nearly 20 years.

An investigation by The Mail on Sunday has exposed a culture of bumper pay packets, bonuses and business-class flights at the state-backed rail giant.

The revelations follow a ‘year from hell’ for commuters after the shambolic introduction of a new timetable and delays to vital upgrades to the network.

The proportion of cancelled or severely delayed trains is at its highest level since 2001, and Network Rail, which runs Britain’s rail infrastructure, faces a multi-million-pound fine from the regulator if it fails to improve its dire performance,

Despite this, figures released under the Freedom of Information Act show 963 Network Rail employees received more than £100,000 in 2017-18, up from 882 in 2016-17.

Of those, 131 earned more than £150,000 last year.

The figures include salaries, bonuses, pension contributions, overtime and other allowances.

Many saw earnings swelled by big bonuses, including 61 who got a bonus of more than £30,000 and two who received six-figure bonuses.

One senior rail industry executive last night branded Network Rail a ‘bloated bureaucracy’, and Tory MP Grant Shapps, whose constituents in Welwyn Garden City suffered major disruption during last year’s timetable fiasco, said: ‘Having suffered the railway year from hell, commuters will be stunned at employees raking in six-figure earnings.’

The top Network Rail earner is chief executive Andrew Haines, who receives £588,000.

Chairman Peter Hendy, who owns a £1.5 million Grade II listed Georgian villa in Bath, is in a pay band from £375,000 to £379,999.

It is not only senior bosses enjoying six-figure packages. In total, 224 signallers receive between £80,000 and £100,000 and ten are paid more than £100,000 due to overtime and weekend pay.

A Network Rail spokesman said: ‘Pay is always a controversial subject for a public body, but we need to attract expertise from around the world to help run this vital public service.’

They accepted that too many passengers experienced delays and cancellations and said ‘this has to change’.

Our investigation also shone a spotlight on Network Rail Consulting (NRC), a company based in London and established by Network Rail in 2012 with a mission to win lucrative global rail consultancy contracts.

The company also has offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, Toronto, Boston, New York and Washington, and £415,178 was spent on business-class flights over the past seven years.

Just 12 per cent of its air- travel spending went on economy tickets.

NRC was set up to make money, but reported a pre-tax loss of £1.8 million last year.

The spokesman said NRC ‘shares British engineering know-how across the globe’ and ‘enables us to feed in best practice from around the world’.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
