«Breaking News» Stan Collymore opens up about his struggles with depression as he vows to 'fight back'

Stan Collymore has bravely documented his battle with depression on Twitter in a bid to 'fight back' and share his experiences with fellow sufferers.

The former England footballer, 48, spoke movingly about his latest bout of the disease and his 'longing to never wake' in a message to followers this morning.

He revealed that he had been sleeping '20 hours a day' in the last three weeks and was 'stinking to high heaven' as he could not motivate himself to wash.

However the Nottingham Forest, Liverpool and Aston Villa legend said he was planning to go to the gym today in a bid to overcome his depression.

Fellow sport stars were quick to rally around the football pundit, including BBC presenter Gary Lineker, who tweeted: 'Good luck fella'.

Collymore referred to the current bout as the 'second worst of his life' in what is thought to be a reference to a similar dark episode in 2011.

At the time, he revealed how he was spending the majority of his day in bed with the curtains drawn and was signed off from his presenter role at TalkSport Radio.

His tweet posted at 8.13am this morning read: 'Last 3 wks I've been in bed sleeping 20 hrs a day, stinking to high heaven, unable to wash.

'2nd worst bout of D of my life filled with a longing to never wake. Today I'm going to the gym. To fight back.

'If you're struggling, you're not alone, and it will pass. Stay in the game.'

Hundreds of social media users rallied in support of Collymore after he sent the tweet, including former footballers Mark Bosnich and Kevin Campbell.

Collymore, who currently writes a newspaper column on football, has had a well-documented battle with depression both during and after his playing career.

He punched former girlfriend Ulrika Jonsson during a vicious assault in a Paris bar in 1998, an attack he attributed to his struggles with mental health.

Now a celebrated football pundit, Collymore was among the first British sport stars to open up about his depression during the late 90s.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
