Instagram has seemingly set Pinterest in its sights as the next social media app it seeks to topple, after an alleged new feature has leaked.
In the same way it incorporated Instagram Stories to make Snapchat's similar feature obsolete, the Facebook-owned app is now making a bid to better Pinterest's 'Boards' feed, new code shows.
According to TechCrunch, Instagram has been privately prototyping a public 'Collections' feature, which allows multiple users to contribute saved images to certain trends or genres.
Private Collections were first launched on the app two years ago, but if Instagram follows through with its believed intentions to make the feature a public feed, it would become a direct competitor of Pinterest.

Instagram is allegedly seeking to oust Pinterest from upper echelons of social media acclaim, by introducing a new feature in keeping with the curation app's main niche

Discovered in the code of Instagram's Android version, Jane Manchun Wong discovered Instagram is currently trialing a public version of its Collections feature (pictured: A prototype of what the app may look was generate by Wong, using the code)
Yesterday, news leaked that Pinterest had joined a long-list of other popular technologies companies who intend to go public this year.
Pinterest allows users to organize their own photos - or another user's - into public or private albums, which are usually centered around themes of art, food, fashion and furniture.
The curation app has experienced overwhelming success since its launch in 2008, boasting 250 million monthly active users and generating a staggering $12.3 billion valuation in 2017.
And now reverse engineering specialist Jane Manchun Wong says she's discovered evidence to suggest Instagram are hedging a bet to take home a slice of the action.
Unearthing a 'Make Collection Public' option buried in Instagram's Android code, Wong shared a screenshot of what the feature is set to look like.
According to Wong, users will be able to add contributions to a collection, meaning credit can be given to the original photographers, instead of pictures being ripped and re-shared as if another's.

Instagram currently has a private Collections feature, but a public feed would be virtually indistinguishable from Pinterest's model
At the moment, nothing in the code indicates that users will be able to follow specific collections - which would make the app's feature almost indistinguishable from Pinterest - but that's believed to be the next step.
Instagram allegedly told TechCrunch 'We're not testing this,' which is said to be a typical response of tech companies who're trialing products that aren't yet available publicly.
The discovery marks a stark resemblance to Instagram's decision to launch its Stories branch in August 2016 - six months before Snapchat officially became a public company.
The move saturated Snapchat's growth rate by 88 percent - and two years on its growth has halted all together.
If Wong's discovery proves to be a Instagram's next major software update, experts say it could spell real trouble for Pinterest.
With Instagram's 1 billion months users - and 500 million daily - Pinterest may suffer the same fate as Snapchat come 2021.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
