Millions of social media users have turned to Facetune and filters to alter their facial features in pictures — but now the rise in non-invasive plastic surgery offers a semi-permanent fix people can purchase.
One procedure in particular, facial contouring, has seen a huge surge in popularity over the last year, because it allows for clients to enhance areas of their face without the permanence of surgery.
New York City-based oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Irene Gladstein, who works at Enhance Aesthetic Arts, where she focuses on face and eye procedures, spoke to DailyMail.com about why the concept of facial contouring is so appealing to clients — and why there has been such a surge in popularity among millennials in the past 12 months.
Big change: Facial contouring is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure and enhances areas of the face without the permanence of surgery. Pictured left and right is a woman before and after
The beginning: Dr. Irene Gladstein with Enhance Aesthetic Arts in New York typically tells clients to have multiple places injected during the procedure to provide 'facial balance'
Focused: 'It is infinitely more effective and aesthetically pleasing to consider a face as a whole and create an integrated approach to timeless beauty,' Dr. Gladstein said
'[Facial contouring is] a "go-to" approach for improvement in facial shape, contour and definition,' Dr. Gladstein she explained.
'The concept of facial contouring is based on the ideas of facial balance and harmony. While we occasionally need to limit focus to certain features (e.g. smile lines, jawlines, cheeks), it is infinitely more effective and aesthetically pleasing to consider a face as a whole and create an integrated approach to timeless beauty.'
Dr. Gladstein will often target areas on the client's face — such as underneath the cheekbones, along the jaw, at the temples, and along laugh lines — that will receive cannula injection fillers to create 'facial balance'.
Traditionally, dermal fillers are injected into the skin with a needle. But Dr. Gladstein's practice uses a blunt-tipped cannula for the injections because it creates less bruising and swelling on the face. The filler injected into the face is a hyaluronic acid filler.
Facial contouring differs from when someone will visit a plastic surgeon for a nose job or face lift, for example, because the non-invasive procedure is not permanent. Instead, the results typically last around one year for patients.
'We love this approach as it offers a completely non-surgical and artistic approach to facial balancing,' Dr. Gladstein said.
Non-surgical cosmetic procedures have not just grown in popularity in at Dr. Gladestein's office, but also in practices across the United States.
The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery's (AAFPRS) annual survey found 80 per cent of all treatments performed by facial plastic surgeons in 2018 were cosmetic, non-surgical procedures.
Also, the survey found millennial clientele was growing at an astounding rate with 72 per cent of facial plastic surgeons seeing an increase of patients under the age of 30.
Although non-surgical plastic surgeries are on the rise, Dr. Gladstein admitted there are still myths she often has to debunk within her practice.
'Our current most common concern is, "Am I going to look natural?"' she admitted.
'This is exactly where the concept of facial harmony and balance comes into play. Our answer is simple and truly taps into our overall aesthetic approach. Keeping it balanced will keep it looking natural.'
Inclusive: Dr. Gladstein admitted a majority of clients are females, but she has found a growth in men seeking out treatments such as facial contouring (pictured is one client)
Difference: Male clients typically want a more chiseled jawline (pictured above is one client's results), Dr. Gladstein said, while females want definition in both the jaw and cheekbones
Revealed: Four-fifths of all treatments performed by plastic surgeons in 2018 were cosmetic, non-surgical procedures, according to AAFPRS' annual survey
The fear of keeping it natural was not only noticed by Dr. Gladstein, but also by AAFPRS. The review found 41 per cent of patients in 2018 stated the fear of looking unnatural as their top concern when considering cosmetic enhancements.
In the last year, Dr. Gladstein performed closed to 1,000 cases of facial contouring on both men and women, but she admitted females still dominate her clientele.
'While women still comprise the majority of our practice, men's interest in facial rejuvenation and enhancement has catapulted in the recent years,' Dr. Gladstein said. 'This uptrend places a huge responsibility when it comes to the providers.'
Male clients typically want a more chiseled jawline, Dr. Gladstein said, while females want definition in both the jaw and cheekbones.
Besides the rise in non-surgical cosmetic surgery, 2019 is expected to see the introduction of new and innovative treatments to solve other concerns.
Botox 2.0, a stronger injection expected to last for up to six months, is currently being studied and tested. When injected into areas of the skin, Botox will temporarily remove wrinkles as it paralyzes the facial muscles.
Cosmetic surgeon Tijion Esho raved about the new procedure to Glamour UK despite it being unavailable to the public.
'You'll need less of it and the results last longer, which is good for practitioners as it means you save more in terms of dosage and good for patients as the longevity means less treatments,' he told the publication.
Niche surgeries for smaller places on the head — such as the earlobes and Cupid's bow — are also on the rise, according to plastic surgeons.
'[A] procedure I've been seeing a lot recently addresses the space between your nose and your lip, that little Cupid's bow,' NYC-based plastic surgeon Dr. David Shafer told Allure.
'It elongates over time and can age the lip, so we do a small incision right under the nose and lift up the lip. It's becoming very popular; it's a small surgical procedure, but it makes a nice difference without having to plump the lips with filler.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
