A retired FDNY lieutenant on Wednesday told jurors in the murder trial of broker turned backgammon pro Rod Covlin that rigor mortis had set in to the body of UBS financial guru Shele Danishefsky by the time first responders arrived at her apartment on New York's Upper West Side.

Retired Lt. Matthew Casey testified he was the first to enter Shele's bathroom to find her body on the floor with Covlin kneeling on the floor between her and the bathtub.

He said Covlin asked him to 'do something'.

But, Casey said, there was nothing to do since rigor mortis had set in.

'She was dead for quite a while,' Casey said.

Shele's family sat stoically in the front row of the courtroom as attorneys displayed the photos, which depicted Shele face up on the floor with her head sitting a puddle of blood-tinged water.

He said when he first got to the apartment, the door was answered by the Covlins' daughter Anna.

'I asked her if her mother was home and she said words to the effect of 'kind of, sort of,' Casey said.

He said the lights were off in the apartment except for the bathroom where Shele's body lay.

Casey's testimony was matched by firefighter William Rix, who made the call not to administer CPR to Shele.

'She's got obvious signs of death, we're not doing CPR,' Rix recounted. He said he reached out with his right hand to check the pulse in She's carotid artery when he noticed blood pooling in her body. He said he grabbed Shele's arm but 'it was completely locked.'

'The body was stiffening for at least a couple of hours,' Rix testified.

The first police officer on the scene testified Wednesday afternoon that he asked Covlin what had happened.

“He said his daughter came and got him and said, ‘Mommy won’t wake up, Mommy isn’t moving,” Police Officer William Irwin said.

He was asked whether he saw any “red or blood-like substance” on Covlin’s clothes and Irwin responded that Covlin, who told authorities that he had rolled lifted Shele out of the bloody water in the tub and laid her on the bathroom floor, had a clean white T-shirt on.

Irwin added that both Covlin’s T-shirt and dark sweat pants were “completely dry.”

But, he admitted on cross-examination, that he did not feel the fabric to see whether the clothes in fact wet, nor did he recommend to detectives that Covlin’s clothing be seized.

Earlier on Wednesday jurors were shown video of Covlin leaving the building, known as Dorchester Towers, though the lobby just after 4 a.m. on Dec. 31.

He stopped to ask the lobby attendant whether he wanted anything from the store, according to the testimony of Albert Battle-Figueroa.

'It kind of struck me as strange,' Battle-Figueroa said, noting that he and Covlin had spoken only rarely previously.

He declined Covlin's offer and Covlin said, 'C'mon, man, I know you want something,' Battle Figueroa recounted.

'So I asked for a candy bar,' Battle-Figueroa said.

Assistant District attorney Matthew Bogdanos prodded him for details.

'Snickers.'

About 10 minutes later, Covlin returned carrying a white bag and handed Battle-Figueroa the candy, the concierge testified.

Video also showed Covlin making a second trip outside that morning, about an hour after the first. He went out via a back door and returned through the lobby since the back door is locked overnight, Battle Figueora said.

Battle-Figueroa's colleague, Louie Melendez, testified that he was on the desk when the Covlins' daughter Anna called down to the lobby at 7:11 a.m. to tell them that an ambulance was coming for Shele and to let the EMTs up to the apartment.

He said the child sounded upset and nervous on the phone.

'Her voice cracked,' Melendez said. 'It sounded like she was crying.'

Melendez can be seen on the video taking the call and later the clip shows fire and emergency medical personnel, including Casey and Rix striding though the lobby on their way to Shele's apartment.

Covlin is accused of strangling Shele and faking the scene to look like she had hit her head and drowned in the bathtub in a freak accident on the morning of Dec. 31, 2009 – just days after she spoke to a lawyer about the possibility of removing the unemployed Covlin from her will.

Shele's Orthodox Jewish family waived an autopsy and Shele was buried a few days later.

But as suspicions about the circumstances of Shele's death mounted, her body was exhumed and a post mortem examination revealed a fractured hyoid bone in her neck, a telltale sign of strangulation.

Covlin was indicted in 2015 for murder and his trial began last month in Manhattan Supreme Court.

Prosecutors have said Covlin was motivated by 'pure, unadulterated greed' in Shele's death, which occurred just days after she contacted a lawyer to remove Covlin from her will.

If convicted of murdering Shele, Covlin faces 25 years to life.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
