«Breaking News» Hatton Garden burglar 'Basil' 'walks like Charlie Chaplain' says foot expert

Dr Gordon Burrow said there was 'strong support' from video evidence for the prosecution case that Michael Seed (pictured), 58, was the final member of the team who carried out the £13.7 million  Hatton Garden Heist.

The 'unusual' walk of a man accused of role in Hatton Garden Heist has been likened to Charlie Chaplin's, a foot expert told a court.

Dr Gordon Burrow said there was 'strong support' from video evidence shown to Woolwich Crown Court, that Michael Seed, nicknamed Basil is the man seen in CCTV images carrying a black bin bag to and from the scene of the raid at an underground safe-deposit facility

Alleged thief, Seed is the final member of the team to go on trial for the £13.7 million heist in London in which cash and gems was stolen from 73 boxes in  Easter bank holiday during 2015.

Dr Burrow, an expert in podiatry and chiropody, said the man in the Hatton Garden footage had feet which were slightly abducted' [meaning they stick out slightly].

He told jurors an extreme example of foot abduction would result in a walk that resembles that of Charlie Chaplin.

Dr Burrow was asked to compare Basil's walk with that of Seed, in covert footage taken as he strolled around Canary Wharf on April 28, 2016.

'The conclusion is there is strong support for the proposition the unknown in question in the footage is that of the known footage by analysing features of the gait,' said Dr Burrow, giving evidence at Woolwich Crown Court on Wednesday.

'There are numerous consistencies and similarities of gait features between the unknown and that of the known suspect, which would support the proposition they are probably the same person.'

Prosecutors say Michael Seed was recorded on CCTV inside the safe-deposit facility, wearing a wig, a mask, ear defenders and a hat

Dr Burrow also highlighted how Basil's right foot 'doesn't appear to clear the ground well'.

'The classic case of seeing somebody with that type of foot position, if you remember going back to John Thaw, who appeared in Inspector Morse, his right foot dropped down as he walked forward,' he added.

Other features of the style of walk included an 'over-extension of both knees' and a 'limp', he said.

Pictures from earlier surveillance footage of Seed in November 2015 was also shown in court.

The court heard Seed had broken his leg in a traffic accident in 1994, requiring a nail and screws to fix the fracture in his femur.

His medical records also show muscle wasting to his right thigh and a history of pain in one or both hips.

Dr Burrow said the medical history is consistent with the gait seen in the footage of Basil and the covert images taken of Seed around a year later.

'There are numerous features of gait, which show consistency, of the right side especially, which are also unusual in my experience and opinion,' he said.

Police raided Seed's one-bedroom council flat in Liverpool Road, Islington, on March 27 last year almost three years after the burglary of Hatton Garden Safe Deposit.

In the raid gang members looted gold, cash and gems from 73 boxes after drilling through the vault wall.

Brian Reader, 79, John 'Kenny' Collins, 78, Daniel Jones, 63, Carl Wood, 61, and Terry Perkins, who died last year aged 69 have been convicted of conspiring to carry out the burglary, while William Lincoln, 63, Hugh Doyle, 51, Terri Robinson, 38, and Bren Walters, 47, were also convicted in connection with the crime.

Seed is also alleged to have taken part in the 2010 raid on Bond Street jewellers Chatila, which saw thieves making off with about £1 million worth of jewellery from display cabinets after failing to drill into a safe containing gems valued at around £40 million.

Jones pleaded guilty to the burglary, while Perkins died in prison before he could be tried. Charles Matthews, 55, was convicted earlier this year of receiving stolen goods from Chatila.

Seed denies two charges of conspiracy to commit burglary and one charge of conspiracy to convert or transfer criminal property.

 The trial continues.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
