Dermot O'Leary has quit as NTAs host following 10 years of duty, after saying he 'would throw in the towel' if Ant and Dec won a controversial 18th gong last month.
The duo had playfully wished him a 'happy retirement' after accepting their Best Presenters award despite Ant not working for a year, amid his personal problems.
In a statement, Dermot wrote: 'After 10 years of proudly hosting the National Television Awards, I have decided it’s time to step down as host. It’s been a tough decision because we have had a ball over the last decade, but 10 years feels about right.
Shocker: Dermot O'Leary has quit as NTAs host following 10 years of duty, after saying he 'would throw in the towel' if Ant and Dec won a controversial 18th gong last month
'I would like to thank Indigo and my ITV family for a brilliant ten years and look forward to proudly passing on the baton in 2020...and a holiday in January!'
His announcement was soon met with lament from fans and colleagues, as Davina McCall simply wrote: 'Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo'.
Other heartbroken fans wrote: 'Nooo, itll be soo weird to watch without you you have been brilliant. i wonder who will take over...
'Oh no! You’re the only reason we watch it! Good decision though, now onto bigger, better and more exciting things... Awwwww Gong to really miss you as host. You’re fab Dermot! Enjoy your January holidays.'

In an official statement from ITV, spokespeople wrote: 'ITV and Indigo Television thank Dermot for a decade at the helm of the National Television Awards, he's a brilliant presenter and one of the best live event hosts in the business...
'As a highly valued member of the ITV family we respect his decision and we look forward to continuing working with him.'
As well as his comment aimed at Ant and Dec, during last month's star-studded yet gaffe-laden NTAs, Dermot also made a dig at fellow presenter Holly Willoughby
The host, who could frequently be heard talking to guests off-mic during awards announcements at the annual event, referenced Willoughby’s increasing popularity as the live show commenced at London’s O2 Arena.
Seeing the funny side: Dermot also took a playful dig at fellow presenter Holly Willoughby on a night littered with on-air blunders at the NTAs
Taking to the stage at the time after a short Bodyguard inspired skit with actor Richard Madden, O’Leary quipped the event was ‘one of the few shows on ITV not hosted by Holly Willoughby.'
Cutting to the audience, the This Morning presenter – whose portfolio also includes Surprise Surprise, Dancing On Ice and a recent successful stint on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! – looked mildly surprised, but quickly regained her composure.
The gag pre-empted a catalogue of live gaffes, blunders and foul mouthed faux pas’ on the night, amongst them O’Leary’s clumsy introduction of backstage correspondents Dani Dyer and Jack Fincham.
The usually-assured host appeared to be unaware that they were sitting in the audience as he welcomed the Love Island winners from 'somewhere backstage,' not realising that he was introducing pre-recorded footage.
The viewing public appeared to as bemused as those in attendance, with one tweeting: 'When dermot tells us jack and dani are backstage but we see them in the audience #NTAs.'
While another added: 'Somewhere backstage? They’re.. seating..down..like they’ve just shown. #NTAs.'
Commenting on the gaffe, a third wrote: 'Dani & Jack are in the audience, Dermot. They aren't doing anything backstage.'

The blunders continued as Danny Dyer picked up the award for Best Serial Drama Performance, and the actor struggled to hold back tears during his emotional speech, while also dropping an awkward f-bomb.
He raved: 'I can't believe that wow! Thank you! I want to thank all my EastEnders mob over there you're like my brothers and sisters...
'I just want to say to all you young kids living out there in poverty who don't think they've got a right to dream or hope, do not let that define where you're going in life, you can whoever you want to be.
'I want to dedicate this award to Harold Pinter, he believed in me when no one else did.'
Here we go: The blunders continued as Danny Dyer picked up the award for Best Serial Drama Performance, and the actor struggled to hold back tears during his emotional speech, while also dropping an awkward f-bomb
Struggling to hold back tears the soap star added: 'I'm getting f****** emotional now,' to the shock of the crowd, and then walked off-stage.
There was further confusion as This Morning won Best Daytime, with O'Leary heard talking off-camera before Willoughby accepted the award with co-host Phillip Schofield.
Viewers could still hear the presenter as he chatted to Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds star Lily, four - onstage to hand over the award with co-star Ken, 87 - as the nominations were announced.
Gaffe: Danny DeVito, on-hand to present the award for Drama Performance to Richard Madden, wasn't spared the curse of the errant mic as he took to the stage
'We've got to show clips of all the shows,' he could be heard telling her. 'And then when we come back you can go "right, let's do it now!"'
Danny DeVito, on-hand to present the award for Drama Performance to Richard Madden, was also not spared the curse of the errant mic as he took to the stage.
His perplexed voice could be heard as the nominations VT aired, with the Hollywood legend sounding confused as he asked a producer: 'Oh you want me to say the names? They asked me not to say the names.'
In what was perhaps a shock to some, Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly won the Best Presenters category - a prize they have taken home every year since 2001.
The pair, however, have spent the majority of the past 12 months apart professionally, thanks to Ant's recovery from alcohol and substance abuse issues.
Dec continued his work on Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, Britain's Got Talent and I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! without Ant - yet they are up for an award as a twosome. Ant has returned to these shows in 2019 however.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
