«Breaking News» Cops slam anti-immigrant protesters for putting up intimidating flyers all over Iowa City

Flyers found throughout Iowa City earlier this month encouraging people to call Immigration and Customs Enforcement drew a rebuke from local law enforcement this week.

After signs reading 'Keep Iowa nice, call ICE' were posted downtown on February 16, the Johnson County Sheriff's Office expressed its disappointment on Friday, KCRG news reports.

'When we see these kinds of things, it's concerning that people might be frightened to contact law enforcement if they think it's going to lead to ICE being contacted,' Det. Sgt. Brad  Kunkel said. 'That's just not going to be the case.'

The detective worried that such signs could send a message that undocumented immigrants would avoid asking law enforcement for help out of fear of being reported to the immigration authorities.

Though no laws were broken, police, Det. Sgt.  Kunkel says that the local community rises above such acts.

'There's no place for that behavior,' said Kunkel stated.

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), in solidarity with those against the flyers, explained to KCCI the practical necessity of immigrants to the state.

'It's important to know that immigrants, they contribute to Iowa society' said Andrew Bribriesco, state legal adviser to LULAC. 'They're making sure that small towns are still thriving, contributing to the local economy, are job creators.'

Other groups in Iowa have also condemned the posters peppering the city.

The Eastern Iowa Community Bond Project, an organization that provides bail funds and legal support to immigrants, were initially tipped about the flyers and released a statement.

'While we believe the sentiments expressed in the posters do not represent the best of the communities of Iowa City and Johnson County, publicly disseminating this message is an act of hate that causes real and lasting harm to the immigrant community,' the EICBP wrote.

'We stand firmly against any acts that threaten our immigrant neighbors, friends, and family, and ask that all members of our community who would stand in solidarity with them do so as well.'

The Iowa City Democratic Socialists of America also released their own response, playing with the format of the original poster.

'Keep Iowa Nice, Abolish ICE,' reads the new sign. 'Immigrants are welcome here.'

The poster controversy is the latest in a series over the past three years in Iowa City, according to KCCI.

In 2017, a sticker saying 'It's okay to be white' was found at the Pedestrian Mall, and months after that, 'Love Your Race' flyers with a URL for the white supremacist group National Alliance were found left on lawns around the city.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
