«Breaking News» Bernie Sanders refuses to call Venezuela's Maduro a 'dictator'

Sen. Bernie Sanders, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, is refusing to dub Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro a 'dictator' in stark contrast to the Trump administration's position.

Sanders declined to call Maduro a dictator and bestow the title of president upon Juan Guaido, the elected leader of the nation's national assembly, in a Univision interview last week.

Given a second opportunity on Monday evening during a CNN town hall to promote his candidacy for the American presidency, Sanders resisted again.

'It's fair to say that the last election was undemocratic, but there are still democratic operations taking place in that country,' he explained.

Sanders said he supports the U.S. position that a free and fair election, with international monitoring, should take place in Venezuela. He said that he supports democracy around the world.

'My record is to be concerned about democracy all over the world. So we've got to do everything we can,' he asserted. 'But at the end of the day, it's going to be the people of Venezuela who determine the future of their country, not the United States of America.'

He further drew a contrast between his policy and that of Donald Trump's, pointing out that the Republican president has not pushed for regime in other countries with authoritarian systems of government.

'And I do find it interesting that Trump is very concerned about what goes on in Venezuela, but what about the last election that took place in Saudi Arabia? Oh, there wasn't any election in Saudi Arabia? Oh, women are treated as third-class citizens?' he said. 'So I find it interesting that Trump is kind of selective as to where he is concerned about democracy.'

The senator's position not only puts him at odds with the Trump administration but other top Democrats who say Maduro has assumed the role of a dictator and must relinquish power.

Sen. Bob Menendez, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, said Tuesday morning on CNN that Sanders is wrong.

'Absolutely, dictatorship is dictatorship whether it comes from the right or the left,' he said. 'Dictatorship oppresses their people. I'm really surprised that Sen. Sanders could not at least call him a dictator.'

Sanders, who embraces socialist policies as a concept but wants to enact them through democratic processes, was first faced with the question of Maduro's legitimacy on Univision last week, following the announcement of his candidacy.

Asked is he believes Guaido is the legitimate president of Venezuela, Sanders told anchor Jorge Ramos, 'No.'

'There are serious questions about the recent election. There are many people who feel it was a fraudulent election,' he said.

But that doesn't mean that Guaido, who the U.S. recognizes as the acting president of the country, should be treated as such.

He would not call Maduro a dictator.

'I think clearly he has been very, very abusive,' Sanders said. 'That is a decision of the Venezuelan people, so I think, Jorge, there's got to be a free and fair election.'

Sanders warned against American interventionism.

'But what must not happen is that the United States must not use military force and intervene again as it has done in the past in Latin America, as you recall, whether it was Chile or Brazil or the Dominican Republic or Guatemala,' he asserted.

The Trump administration has not supported Guaido's revolution with military force, but has slapped sanctions on Maduro and is providing humanitarian aid to the nation's people.

Vice President Mike Pence met Monday in Colombia with Guaido, whom Maduro ordered not to leave the country and may be sent to jail when he returns.

'We got a long way to go. I made it clear to President Guaido we’re going to continue to press on. We’re going to continue to call allies join with us. We’re going to continue to isolate the Maduro economically and diplomatically until democracy is restored,' Pence told reporters after their talk.

The vice president has unapologetically called Maduro a dictator on behalf of the Trump administration. He told world leaders on Monday that it's time for them to do the same.

'To the leaders around the world, we also say it’s time — there can be no bystanders in Venezuela’s struggle for freedom,' Pence said in Bogota. 'The day is coming soon when Venezuela’s long nightmare will end and Venezuela will once more be free.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
