As teen was accomplished athlete but shunned a sports career in favour of travelling the world and at 22 while on a journey through India she met Peter.

Meanwhile following a PHD in Ecology Peter had worked as a lecturer before deciding to leave his job and live life on the road.

He explained: 'I was sitting in a staff meeting looking out of the window thing they might be paying me $50 an hour to sit here but my life is out there.'

He adds: 'One of the most liberating things I ever did in my life is leave my house, put the keys in the letterbox for the estate agent and then head to the airport with one bag. From that point on I became a refugee from modern life.'

The couple has no permanent address, travelling from place to place with a rucksack full of belongings.

When it comes to survival Peter is tasked with the cooking while Miriam takes on the role of gatherer, hunting animals for their meat using a bow and arrow, something she admits is a far cry from her former life.

'I was raised a vegetarian' she tells Ben, revealing it took her two years to teach herself how to hunt.

'At the beginning it was quite shocking, I killed something it was quite traumatic' she adds.

'But then you eat it and it's so filled with energy. I feel a bit like I become that hare or I become that goat - a bit wilder in a way.'

The couple do occasionally have to make a trip to a supermarket as Ben discovers when he and Peter stop off at a convenience store in a small Bulgarian village for some supplies that can't be found in the wild - including ice cream.

Peter and Miriam fund their lifestyle with their £40,000 life savings, estimating they spend around £3,000 a year, and he admits they aren't worried about finances.

Peter explains: 'People often ask what would happen if you ran out of money. Well we'd go get a job, simple.'

When it comes to washing Miriam sticks to streams and brooks revealing the very unusual shampoo she uses to Ben - her own urine.

After asking the host to fill a cup up with his own they head down to the stream where, after wetting their heads, she instructs him to pour the urine over his head, allowing it to soak for 20 minutes before rinsing.

After Ben points out that many would be horrified by her approach Miriam says: 'For me going to work every day, sitting in traffic jams, that's uncomfortable for me.'

And it is not only the couple's lifestyle that is unconventional but their relationship too, with Miriam explaining to Ben that she and Peter have an 'open' partnership.

She tells Ben: 'We have an open relationship. We don't own each other, I don't own him he doesn't own me I feel completely free I feel like I can do whatever I like.

'I think if you know what love is you cannot only love one why should it be so focused? It's unnatural. If you are together for a really long time you will fall in love with someone else every now and then.'

With three decades between them, Miriam admits that Peter is sometimes mistaken for her father.

Commenting on their age gap Peter said: 'When I met Miriam she was an adult, and I was an adult, who says that relationships have to be like this or this? It's just another prejudice.'

Miriam admits that they have spoken about children and she decided against them admitting she has no plans to settle down.

But Peter admits that he will eventually have to slow down, and while Ben expressed doubts that they could return to a 'normal' life he disagreed.

Peter said: 'This whole world of ours is free choice. At any moment we could say we're going back to the normal world now.'

Ben Fogle: New Lives in the Wild airs on Tuesday nights at 9pm on Channel 5. Watch previous episodes on My5.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
