While Netflix says that more than 45 million accounts watched the movie, Nielsen, the agency that measures television viewership, said 26 million people watched the film.
But Nielsen’s figures don’t take into account the viewers from outside of the United States.

It also doesn’t factor in viewers who watched the movie using their phone, tablet, or laptop computer, according to CNN.
That might help explain why Netflix’s data indicated that more than 45 million accounts watched the movie during its first week of availability.
Nielsen reaches its figures on television viewership by sampling information from 48,000 homes and more than 118,000 people.
Netflix says that Bird Box is the single biggest debut in the history of the streaming service.
It was first made available for streaming on December 21.
The impressive figure is a new record for the streaming giant, which tends to be extremely secretive about its viewership numbers.
Netflix tweeted, 'Took off my blindfold this morning to discover that 45,037,125 Netflix accounts have already watched Bird Box — best first 7 days ever for a Netflix film!'
The streaming service included a gif of Bird Box star Sandra Bullock, 54, gasping, 'Oh my God.'
The dystopian thriller received a small week-long theatrical release prior to its streaming debut. The film had its premiere in November at Los Angeles' AFI Fest.

It's important to approach Netflix's announcement with a healthy dose of skepticism.
The studio rarely releases viewing numbers for its films or TV shows, making Bird Box an exception.
The figures also aren't independently vetted by any organization, so it's impossible to guarantee that they're accurate.
Netflix also doesn't indicate what counts as a viewing, so people who only watch a minute or two might be mixed in with those who sat through the whole film.
Bird Box takes place in a future world in which demonic visions drive anyone who's unfortunate enough to see them insane. The infected individuals then kill themselves.
Bullock stars as a woman trying to survive with two small children and a broken family.
They have to keep blindfolds on constantly when outside to protect themselves.
The scary movie seems to be a hit with audiences, and currently holds a 66% fresh rating from Rotten Tomatoes. However, it only scores a 47% rotten rating from the site's top reviewers.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
