«Breaking News» Parents react with fury as academics back school climate strikes

Parents are up in arms ahead of this week's school climate strikes which will see thousands of young Britons skip lessons to demonstrate in the streets.

Support for Friday's strike is growing rapidly by the day with more than 50 events confirmed across the country, from Fort William to Hastings.

But some parents have criticised the demonstrations and questioned whether it's necessary for children to miss school for the cause.

Parent Chris Richardson from Gloucester, who has a 13-year-old daughter, proposed a method for children to have their message heard without missing classes.

He said: 'The best way for a school child to protest against climate change is to walk to school and refuse to be driven.'

Rochelle South, from Sheffield, was suspicious about the intentions of the pupils signing up to take part in the strikes.

She tweeted: 'Bet they'll not be on [the] pikcet line from school starting time to home time. Hope they all get an unauthorized absence mark, because lots of children will say that's what they're doing but in reality they'll be hanging out with their mates or in bed.'

Father Craig Blackburn, from Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire, ruled out allowing his daughter to take part.

He said: 'I certainly won't be giving my daughter permission to leave her school on Friday to protest against climate change and will be taking this up with her school.'

Friday's strike is part of a movement sparked in August by 16-year-old schoolgirl Greta Thunberg, who held a solo protest outside Sweden’s parliament.

Her solo act captured the imagination of children across the globe, with up to 70,000 school kids each week taking part in 270 towns and cities.

In Britain, Friday's demonstration is expected to see the biggest protests by students since the 2010 tuition fee strikes.

Today, more than 200 academics voiced their support in a letter sent to The Guardian.

The scholars, including 100 professors, said young people have had no choice but to take matters into their own hands.

They wrote:  '[Those taking part in the strike] have every right to be angry about the future that we shall bequeath to them, if proportionate and urgent action is not taken.

'We are inspired that our children, spurred on by the noble actions of Greta Thunberg and many other striking students all around the world, are making their voices heard.'

The letter pointed to a the latest UN report that warned the planet has just 12 years before the damage of global warming is irreversible.

It warned that record-breaking droughts, heatwaves, warming oceans and melting ice sheets would follow after 12 years.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
