«Breaking News» Emmys: Jenifer Lewis' Nike sweatshirt in support of Colin Kaepernick

Black-ish star Jenifer Lewis made a statement on the Emmys red carpet on Monday when she donned a Nike sweatshirt in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick.

Kaepernick, a former quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers who made headlines when he refused to stand for the national anthem in protest over the country's systemic racism against black people, recently became the new face of Nike.

Lewis said she'd chosen to wear the sportswear brand to the Emmys 'in support of Colin Kaepernick's protest against police brutality and racial injustice.'

She paired the red and black sweater, with diamante tick, with black leggings and black and white sneakers.

The actress, 61, said she wanted to 'speak to the millennials today to let them know they are not alone when they speak out.'

Nike's controversial decision to name Kaepernick as the new face of their brand sparked a backlash with some conservatives who posted photos of themselves burning their own Nike merchandise in protest.

Country star John Rich and controversial actor James Woods spoke out against Nike after the announcement, with Woods calling it 'brand suicide.'

'I support every American's right to protest whatever they want. However, if you endorse someone who wears #pigsocks that's where you lose me. If Nike wants their 'swoosh' to be associated with calling our police 'pigs' then so be it. I have a right to not buy their products,' Rich tweeted Sepember. 4.

But many other fans and celebrities praised the move, with Serena Williams saying she never felt prouder to wear the brand.

Actress Jamie Lee Curtis wrote, 'The swish got it right! Well done.' WhileRussell Crowe tweeted: 'Colin Kaepernick is a dude.'

Alyssa Milano, director Ava DuVernay and singer Common also praised the 'brave' move.

Kaepernick's decision to take the knee during the national anthem at NFL games sparked a wave of protests from his fellow players against institutionalized racism and police brutality.

The peaceful protests have been hugely controversial with President Trump condemning the players and even calling for them to be fired.

Kaepernick is currently a free agent.

Lewis wasn't the only star to make a political statement.

RuPaul, who earned an early Emmy as host of 'RuPaul's Drag Race,' wore a double-breasted suit by Calvin Klein that was adorned with a few black Statues of Liberty.

'Every time I bat my false eyelashes I'm making a political statement,' RuPaul joked.

Actress Q'orianka Kilcher of 'The Alienist' accessorized her red dress with a pin that reads 'I am a voter.'

'It's important to send the message that 'all of our voices matter and all of our votes matter,' Kilcher said on the arrivals carpet, which traded traditional red for gold for the landmark 70th year.

While Emmy nominees nervously wait to hear their name called, or not, there's more on the line at the 8 p.m. EDT ceremony on NBC than personal glory.

'Saturday Night Live' creator Lorne Michaels, producing his second Emmy telecast in 30 years, is tasked with turning viewership around after the 2017 show's audience of 11.4 million narrowly avoided the embarrassment of setting a new low.

The ceremony clearly bears his stamp, with 'SNL' faux news anchors Michael Che and Colin Jost as hosts and familiar 'SNL' faces, including Kate McKinnon and Alec Baldwin, as presenters and nominees. The long-running NBC sketch show, already the top Emmy winner ever with 71, could snare up to three more.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
