«Breaking News» Billie Jean King backs Serena Williams following US Open final outburst

Billie Jean King has backed Serena Williams following her extraordinary outburst in the US Open final.

Williams was beaten 6-2 6-4 by Naomi Osaka, but the final was overshadowed by Williams' rant, in which she heavily criticised umpire Carlos Ramos.

During an eventful final, Williams received a code violation for coaching. She also received a penalty point for racquet abuse and a game penalty for referring to Ramos as a 'liar' and a 'thief'.

Five-time US Open winner King, however, jumped to the defence of Williams.

She tweeted: 'Several things went very wrong during the Women's Finals today.

'Coaching on every point should be allowed in tennis. It isn't, and as a result, a player was penalized for the actions of her coach. This should not happen.'

'When a woman is emotional, she's 'hysterical' and she's penalized for it. When a man does the same, he's 'outspoken' and there are no repercussions. Thank you, @serenawilliams, for calling out this double standard. More voices are needed to do the same.

Victoria Azarenka was also supportive of Williams' actions.

She tweeted: 'If it was men’s match, this wouldn’t happen like this. It just wouldn’t'.

However, former world No 1 Margaret Court was heavily critical of Williams.

As reported by The Australian, Court said: 'It's sad for the sport when a player tries to become bigger than the rules,' Court said. Because the young player (Osaka) out played her in the first set, I think pressure got her more than anything'.

Andy Roddick believed that Ramos was 'within his power to make that call'.

He tweeted: 'Common sense should've prevailed in my opinion. He's within his power to make tat call.

'I've seen an umpire borderline coach a player up, and another dock a game for being called a thief in same tourney. There needs to be some continuity in the future'.

Meanwhile, James Blake admitted that he has 'said worse and not gotten penalised'.

He tweeted: 'I will admit I have said worse and not gotten penalized. And I've also been given a "soft warning" by the ump where they tell you to knock it off or I will have to give you a violation.

'He should have at least given her that courtesy. Sad to mar a well played final that way.'

Williams denied that she received coaching from Patrick Mouratoglou during the game, and stated that she would 'never cheat to win and would rather lose'.

After the game Mouratoglou accused Ramos of taking centre stage.

He tweeted: 'The star of the show has been once again the chair umpire. Second time in this US Open and third time for Serena in a US Open Final.

'Should they be allowed have an influence on the result of a match ? When do we decide that this should never happen again?'.

Later, Williams was punished for smashing her racquet, with Osaka being given a point. Williams reacted furiously and called Ramos a thief.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
