«Breaking News» Australia's dodgiest products prepare to be named ahead of Choice's annual Shonky Awards

Bemused shoppers have named their picks for the year's biggest product fails as they prepare battle it out for a gong that honours the biggest blunders of the past twelve months.

The aptly named Shonky Awards, commissioned by consumer advocacy group Choice, aims to name and shame the year's 'dodgiest offers' - whittled down from an often-hilarious string of nominees.

And among this round's dubious hopefuls are marked up sale items, unexpectedly snack-sizes treats and straight-up dangerous microwaveable meals.

One disgruntled consumer pointed out his amusement when preparing to buy a can of creamy evaporated milk - which is said to have 75 per cent less fat than cream.

But that wasn't the only brash claim. The tin, which is labelled as a sale item, was 25c more expensive that its original price.

'Liar game?' The customer asked, in a comment attached to his entry.

Instead of the original $2.70 price tag, the tin's large sale label now shows its asking price as $3.

Similarly, a bargain hunting supermarket customer noted their suprise when picking up a portion of beef.

Despite being within days of its use-by date, the slice's labelled showed a significant increase in price.

'Sunday night specials at small local supermarket identifies a hiccup with calculations for reductions. I don't think this one won't be a quick sell!' wrote the bewildered shopper.

Once going for just $8.76, the meat claims to have an original price of $15.99, which was then lowered to $12.79 - despite being within two days of its use-by date.

One food-based entry showed a Be Natural branded snack bar as half the size of its packaging and another was a pair of oven baked tempura battered fish are interestingly sold under the brand name, Gastro.

At furniture store Nick Scali, while the sales were legitimate, the savings weren't all that helpful for the pocket.

A set-of-six 'starck chairs', once retailing for $500 were lauded as a sale item even though the decrease was a measly $1 less than the original price.

'Clearance ! Save 0.25%!' the post was amusingly captioned.

And price wasn't the only factor determining 'shonky-ness'.

The microwaved reminisce of a Weight Watchers microwaveable meal appears completely different to its picture on the box.

Shown with as a brown-rimmed dinner without the vegetables promised, the meal is seen to fulfill a different aspect of 'shonky-ness'.

But the company's mantra may still have been achieved through the product with the customer adding they will still 'watch (their) weight by not eating this poop'.

Held annually, Choice's Shonky Awards appropriately aims to 'shine a light on the shonkiest products and companies taking advantage of Australian consumers'.

To be worthy of one of the not-so-prestigious awards, products or services must meet criteria including proven faults or flaws, a lack of transparency, false claims or broken promises, consumer confusion, poor value for money or the 'propensity to outrage or amuse'.

In the lead up to the awards, fed up consumers have been sharing their finds using the hashtag #SpotAShonky - with results set to become even more ludicrous before the big night on October 4.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
