Daryl Dixon seemingly defeated the Whisperers' most deadly fighter, Beta, after a terrifying ambush on Sunday's episode of The Walking Dead.
Rescue mission leader Daryl, played by Norman Reedus, had begrudgingly helped Lydia escape the Whisperers despite knowing her mother, Alpha, would give chase.
'Alpha won't send an army unless she has to. She'll send Beta,' said Lydia [Cassady McClincy], warning he was the group's best fighter.
Rescue mission: Daryl Dixon after successfully rescuing Henry and Lydia from the Whisperers tried to keep them safe on Sunday's episode of The Walking Dead
'Good. Kill him first,' Daryl insisted.
Connie [Lauren Ridloff] led the group of four, which included Henry [Matt Lintz], in the defense plan of entering a tall building where the walkers could not go, writing 'Choke point' – also the title of the episode – on a pad.
'We go up, someplace the Walkers can't go. We separate the living from the dead,' Daryl said admiring the deaf survivor's plan to expose the Whisperers among the mass of walkers they expected to arrive.
Daryl locked Lydia in a cupboard with a dog for protection once the attackers finally arrived, a sign he was coming round to working with her.
Toughest member: Beta as the toughest member of the Whisperers was sent to retrieve Lydia
Battle plan: Connie came up with a battle plan in the episode titled Chokepoint
High ground: The group decided to take high ground in a building to separate the living from the dead
She earlier admitted she would not be willing to fight back, telling Henry: 'These are my people. They've looked out for me most of my life. Sorry ... I can't do it.'
Henry admitted he was falling in love with her – being caught by Daryl as they kissed – and vowed to 'try not to' kill any of the Whisperers.
Lydia was so worried as the attack unfolded that she burst out of the locked cupboard at the first sound of screaming, fearing it was her new love, Henry.
Tender moment: Henry and Lydia kissed again while setting up an ambush
Torn emotions: Lydia admitted that she could not kill her own people after Henry gave her a weapon
It hadn't been – but just as she escaped he was stabbed in the leg, with the dog she unleashed from the cupboard leaping on his attacker, surely saving his life from a second stabbing.
'I'm sorry – I tried not to kill anyone,' Henry said after Lydia rushed to help.
Daryl had no such fears, using his crossbow and also slitting the throat of one Whisperer as they showed up as silhouettes against white sheets he had set up.
Retrieval mission: Beta lead a group of Whisperers intent on retrieving Lydia
Fight on: The Whisperer and Daryl locked eyes before they fought each other
Axe swing: Daryl watched the silhouette of an attacker against a white sheet before striking
But he seemed to have met his match when the towering Beta, played by Sons of Anarchy star Ryan Hurst, ran through a wall and thrust Daryl up against another, asking menacingly: 'Where is she?'
It sparked a dramatic fight between the pair, with them both armed with two knives each at one point – and Daryl stabbing Beta in the chest with a penknife that he secretly pulled out.
'You and your people are nothing to me,' Beta said as he gave chase. 'Your world is already dead. All I want is the girl.'
Throat slash: One of the Whisperers had his throat slashed by Daryl
Tough foe: Daryl was knocked to the ground by Beta during their brawl
Daryl finally found victory by hiding under a floorboard, emerging behind Beta after he walked past – climbing out and barging him down an elevator shaft.
He spat down the elevator shaft after a delayed thud proved Beta fell far.
'If we take her back my friends die. Your friends too,' he told Connie, who wrote on a pad in reply: 'We have friends. She doesn't.'
Sneak attack: Beta had his back turned as Daryl climbed out of his hiding space
Elevator shaft: Daryl took a few fast steps and pushed Beta into an elevator shaft
Daryl seemed to have come around after defeating Beta – telling them they would go to Alexandria to patch up Henry and then move on – 'All of us.'
'There's a whole world out there,' he insisted echoing what Henry earlier told Lydia.
Before the ambush, Lydia warned Henry that her mother would never give up the hunt, saying: 'There's no place we can go where she won't find us.'
No place: Lydia earlier warned the group that her mother Alpha would go anywhere to find her
The episode ended with proof that their biggest threat was not over, either – with Beta rising slowly to his feet despite laying at the bottom of the elevator shaft with a pool of blood by his head.
There was also drama at the Kingdom, with a group of bandits called the Highwaymen ambushing Jerry [Cooper Andrews] and his men and leaving a ransom note.
'Gather every fighter we can spare,' Ezekiel said, complaining to his 'queen' Carol Peletier: 'It never ends, does it.'
Never ends: King Ezekiel complained to Carol Peletier that the violence never ends
'This fair was meant to be a symbol,' he said of the upcoming trade fair. 'A hope for a better future. But it looks like violence is the only currency of this future, same as the old one.'
Carol [Melissa McBride] initially appeared ready for battle, but she instead suggested negotiating, stressing that they did not harm anyone and arguing: 'They sent a little note for crying out loud – a grammatically correct one, too. That sounds pretty civilized.'
'Screw their letter,' Jerry replied. 'It was a grammatically correct death-threat, yo.'
Sword taken: Jerry had his beloved sword taken by the Highwaymen
Carol persuaded them after insisting: 'If I'm wrong and they don't listen – then we'll kill them.'
The meeting initially seemed disastrous, with the Highwaymen pulling weapons on the leaders of the Kingdom and laughing off their offers.
Once the Kingdom showed a stronger presence of fighters, Carol offered them a 'job,' saying: 'Instead of threatening the roads, you and your people keep them safe for us.'
Move night: Carol Peletier made offer of a movie to the Highwaymen
When they asked what they had to offer, Carol asked: 'When's the last time any of you have seen a movie?'
'Seriously?' the Highwaymen leader replied – but clearly accepting the offer as they were next seen saving Tara Chambler and her group from walkers.
Highway safety: The Highwaymen accepted the offer and rescued Tara Chambler's group on the road to the fair
Before their arrival, Earl had been pinned by a walker – with his wife Tammy putting their new baby in a locked box so she could kill zombies to save him.
'Shut up, Earl,' she told him as he urged her to 'just run,' with the elderly couple later deciding to keep the baby.
Once they swooped and started killing walkers, the leader of the new group told Tara they were there to 'escort you to the fair.'
Cute baby: Tammy was taking care of the baby whose parents died with her husband Earl
Under attack: A herd of walkers overwhelmed Tara Chambler's group
'We're the Highwaymen,' he told her, batting zombies in the head. 'At your service.'
They were next seen in the Kingdom, sharing warm exchanges with Carol and Ezekiel as the trade fair started.
The Walking Dead returns on AMC next Sunday.
Timely arrival: The Highwaymen arrived just in time to help clear the road for Tara Chambler and her group
Welcome committe: Ezekiel and Carol welcomed people to the inter-community fair

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
