«Breaking News» Surgeon who treated girl, 4, after Christchurch terror attack breaks down as he describes ordeal

A surgeon who operated on a four-year-old girl critically injured in the Christchurch terror attack ran to surgery for the first time in his life to treat the young victim.

Adib Khanafer, a vascular surgeon at Christchurch Hospital, received a desperate call while in a planned procedure on Friday and automatically knew the situation was serious.

'This was a totally different call ... it said ''come now'' and ''where are you'' and ''how far'',' he told the NZ Herald.

'This is the first time I have run to theatre.'

Dr Khanafer had not yet learnt that almost 50 people were shot dead in the country's worst terrorist attack in history.

Dozens more were being rushed to the same hospital to be treated for their horrific injuries.

Dr Khanafer broke down in tears as he described the harrowing ordeal almost a week later.

The surgeon said he entered the operating theatre to find the four-year-old girl with serious gunshot injuries lying on the table.

He said it was 'really sad' to see such a young victim needing desperate surgery.

The young girl had already been on the table for 45-minutes but Dr Khanafer's vascular expertise was needed for the damage around her pelvis.

Dr Khanafer apologised for his emotional display when speaking to the NZ Herald and explained the situation felt all the more real as the father of four children aged between seven and 14.

'It could have been my boy, it could have been my girl,' he said.

The incident was even more confronting for the surgeon as she was the youngest patient he had ever treated.

Before Christchurch, his youngest patients had been in their 30s and 90 per cent of them were over 60.

Dr Khanafer put his own emotions to one side and worked tirelessly to treat the young victim.

The moment he finished up in the operating theatre, Dr Khanafer stepped outside and began to cry.

He spoke to the girl's father, who was also injured in the attack, and explained they had done their bit but the rest was up to 'God Almighty'.

The young girl was transported to Starship Children's Hospital, in Auckland, and the surgeon has remained in contact about her condition.

Dr Khanafer, who identifies as British Lebanese and trained overseas, said he is extremely optimistic about her chance of recovery.

He also spoke about the lasting impact the Christchurch terror attack has had on children of the Muslim faith.

He explained his 13-year-old daughter feared for his wife's safety due to her choice of wearing the hijab but he reassured her the family lived in a safe town.

There are still 29 victims in hospital following Friday's attack and eight of them are in a critical condition.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
