«Breaking News» Police officers wearing stab vests search men for hidden weapons as knife crime fears escalate

Police officers wearing stab vests were carrying out searches in a popular city centre today in a bid to stem the growing problem of knife crime in Britain.

Four tactical aid unit police officers and two PCSOs swooped on a man in Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester.

The unnamed man, dressed in a blue gilet and a checked cap covering his blond hair, was grabbed by a Greater Manchester Police officer and searched near a statue.

Another man, wearing a blue anorak and with brown hair, was checked by police as he handed a woman his hat.

It came as Greater Manchester Police scaled up their battle against knife crime - using stop and search methods and targeting 'hotspots' in the city.

Assistant Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police Rob Potts said: 'The only way to properly tackle this problem is by working together with communities and our partners.'

He continued: 'Greater Manchester Police will be continuing to run operations to tackle knife crime over the coming weeks and months, incorporating a range of policing tactics including hotspot targeting and stop and search methods as well as working with partners to better understand why people are carrying knives while educating them of the consequences of doing so.

'The problem of knife possession is not going to be properly resolved quickly but I hope that the tragic loss of a 17-year-old boy's life will bring home to people the potential outcome that follows from the carrying and use of knives.

'I also hope parents will also take note and open up that conversation with their children about carrying knives - better an awkward conversation now than a devastating one later.'

On Saturday, a 17-year-old Manchester public schoolboy was stabbed to death on a leafy residential street.

Yousef Makki, a sixth-form pupil at Manchester Grammar School, was stabbed at 6.40pm in Hale Barns, Cheshire.

Two 17-year-old boys have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are reportedly pupils at prestigious schools in the North West.

They are also believed to live in multi-million pound homes in the Hale Barns area.

Assistant Chief Constable Potts added: 'The events of this weekend have sadly raised so many questions about the state of the knife crime problem in Greater Manchester and across the country.

'There is no denying it is a problem for society and one that the police, local authorities, health and education providers are working hard to address.'

Greater Manchester Police were approached for comment.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
