«Breaking News» Meghan and Harry are urged to adopt rare pups

They look so cute, it is hard to imagine they would ever feel unloved. But these five pups could be among the last of their kind.

They are Sussex spaniels and their breed is struggling because of the modern fashion for 'designer' dogs.

Only 34 Sussex spaniel puppies were registered in the UK last year and three of those were imported.

That is down from 56 in 2017 and makes it Britain's rarest native breed.

It is a spectacular fall for a dog that won the coveted Best in Show prize at Crufts in 2009 but is now at the top of the Kennel Club's vulnerable native breed list.

Sussex spaniels, along with other endangered native breeds such as otterhounds and Scotties, are being overlooked by owners in favour of labradoodles, cockapoos and similar trendy crossbreeds popular with celebrities. Now their royal namesakes may be asked to help save them from extinction.

The Sussex Spaniel Association plans to ask the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to adopt a pair of puppies.

Sheila Appleby, vice president of the association, said: 'We desperately need to raise the profile of the breed before it's too late.

'Hopefully the Sussex link will strike a chord with Harry and Meghan, and they can lend their considerable support to help save this wonderful and charismatic breed of dog. When you compare it to the 36,000 labradors born last year, this is a very rare British breed.

'Sussex spaniels are actually a really attractive dog – a medium-sized spaniel with an appealing expression, sturdy legs and a unique golden liver coat.

'They're full of character. They actually grin at you, even when they have been naughty. They're a very tactile breed, they love company. But they seem to have gone out of fashion and been swamped by 'designer' crossbreeds.

'We had a stand at a Sussex Country Fair and we'd get people from the county say, 'Oh I didn't know there was a Sussex spaniel'. As numbers decline we lose the genetic diversity.

'It's important we raise awareness of the plight of this forgotten breed and hopefully the royal couple can help.'

Sussex spaniels were first bred as gun dogs in the late 1700s or early 1800s in Rose Hill, East Sussex, by Augustus Fuller, a shooting estate landowner.

They were very popular in the 19th century. But breeding was discouraged in wartime and by the end of the Second World War their numbers dropped to just seven. They were saved from extinction largely thanks to English breeder Joy Freer, who devoted her life to breeding them.

All today's Sussex spaniels are descended from the dogs she saved. The breed was put on the Kennel Club's vulnerable native breed list in 2004.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
