«Breaking News» Man accused of scamming £47,000 by claiming to be a survivor of the Grenfell fire

A man accused of scamming £47,000 by claiming to be a survivor of the Grenfell fire could not tell police which flat he had lived in because of the sensitive nature of his work with governments on renewable energy, a court heard.

Moses Ettiene denies one count of fraud between July 2017 and June 2018 by claiming he was living in the tower block at the time of the fire in order to claim food and accommodation.

Prosecutors suggest Ettiene was not living in the building in June 2017 and had since defrauded around £47,000 in food and board support, including the cost of a room at the Park Plaza Hotel.

But the 49-year-old told the court he had been subletting a Grenfell flat at the time of the blaze, in which 72 people died.

The jury heard he moved into a flat in the tower block with his partner in 2009, but then moved into another home in the building when they experienced relationship troubles.

When asked why he would not give a flat number to officers, Ettiene said his work was 'sensitive' and he was 'bound by secrecy'.

Giving evidence at Isleworth Crown Court on Monday, Ettiene said he had worked on and off with the US government among others, but told the court he could not say how many.

He said because he did not know if all of his files were destroyed in the Grenfell disaster he could not tell the court which flat he had been living in.

He added: 'I am bound by secrecy, so I am not able to disclose the address at this time.

'The technologies I work with, they have sensitive applications for government use.

'Some of the files I stored were in the flat and because I can't confirm whether they have been destroyed or not I am not able to disclose the flat, the location of that flat, the people I lived with, or anything about that.

'The technology such as hydrogen and battery technology can be very sensitive and my research of those technologies has taken me into, let's say, sensitive areas which need to be regulated by government.'

The jury heard a number of files had been found on his laptop, which Ettiene said were 'government-sensitive presentations' concerning lithium energy, solar panels, and hydrogen fuel cells.

Ettiene, of Southall, in west London, told the court he would pay £150 a week when he could afford it to stay at the flat in Grenfell, but when he could not afford this he would sometimes sleep in the stairwell.

The jury heard he would also stay at his elderly mother's home because he was her carer, as well as with his partner.

Ettiene added: 'At that time, although I still worked with government, when I moved into the new address I kept under the radar.

'I wasn't actually a tenant to say, I was never a tenant. I was subletting at first, then I was sofa surfing because I became technically homeless.'

But prosecutor Benjamin Temple accused Ettiene of lying about living in the tower.

Mr Temple said Ettiene had been living in emergency accommodation at the hotel for months after the Grenfell blaze, but had not told his long-term girlfriend.

He added: 'You keep her in dark. You're a victim of Grenfell, displaced by the fire, you have lost your accommodation, all the property in the house, and your girlfriend, who is your soul mate, you just don't tell her that?'

But Ettiene insisted he had been living at the tower block and did not tell his partner everything.

The trial continues.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
