Netflix star Lana Condor has opened up for the first time in a candid interview about her struggles with an eating disorder and body dysmorphia.
During an interview with Elle Canada for its April issue, Lana spoke about her experience as a classically trained ballerina before taking up acting and how the art can impact someone's body image.
'I know what it’s like to have an eating disorder and body dysmorphia — and also what it’s like to be a friend to someone who has that,' the 21-year-old actress admitted for the first time publicly.
Making moves: Lana, 21, appeared on Elle Canada's cover for the April issue of the magazine while speaking about her rise in the acting industry
Revealed: During an interview, the To All The Boys I've Loved Before actress spoke about how she suffered from an eating disorder and body dysmorphia when younger
'I think it’s time to give people comfort,' she continued. 'You have to eat. You have to stop thinking that a certain body shape is ideal, because it’s not.'
Overcoming her eating disorder inspired Lana to celebrate her relationship with food instead of criticizing herself and her cravings.
'That’s why I literally post about every meal I eat,' she said. This proved true on the set of Elle Canada for the photo shoot as Lana shared with her followers the lunch for the day.
The conversation about body image came up with the publication after a discussion on how a woman's worth in society can often be dictated by her size.
'I look at my friends, and I’m like, "You’re f***ing gorgeous," Lana said. 'But they feel like they’re fat and ugly. I don’t know how this happened, that women feel like they need to apologize [for their physical imperfections].'
She finds this perception is only further pushed within the Hollywood film industry, which historically has never been kind to women.
Lana's popularity in Hollywood rose quickly in the last year after she appeared in the Netflix romcom To All The Boys I've Loved Before with heartthrob Noah Centineo.
After the teen movie released on the streaming site in August, Lana went from hundreds of thousands of followers to an astonishing 6.6 million on Instagram. She has now graced multiple magazine covers and is preparing to film a sequel to the hit movie.
On the rise: The actress gained notoriety in 2018 after her role in the teen movie, but Lana admitted she never thought companies would cast an Asian for a romantic film
Important: 'One of the reasons I took To All the Boys was because it’s just a story about a girl who falls in love for the first time,' Lana said. 'She’s the girl next door who happens to be Asian'
When Lana was younger, though, she never anticipated this success let alone being allowed to star in multiple romcom movies.
'In my short career, I’d never seen studios specifically ask for an Asian-American romantic lead, so I wrote it off,' Lana told Elle. 'Which, I think, is part of the problem: I don’t want anyone to write anything off because of the way they look.'
The success of the film, which reportedly was the Netflix's most streamed movies of 2018, has helped prove to Hollywood the inclusion of Asian actors and story lines should be more a priority.
To Lana, though, it is an revelation she felt should've happened sooner.
'It’s very exciting that this is happening now,” she said.
'But part of me is like "We should already be past this." One of the reasons I took To All the Boys was because it’s just a story about a girl who falls in love for the first time. She’s the girl next door who happens to be Asian.
'Like, that’s not the focus of it because we’re normal f***ing human beings.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
