«Breaking News» Geordie Shore's Holly Hagan calls for reality stars to get financial help from TV bosses

Holly Hagan has hit out at the lack of support given to reality TV stars after they are thrust into the limelight.

The Geordie Shore star, 26, told how she is meeting with MTV soon to discuss some of her concerns and particularly highlighted the lack of financial advice given to reality TV participants.

Holly admitted that for her first few years on Geordie Shore, she assumed she was employed by MTV and did not realise she was considered self-employed and therefore had to handle her own taxes.

Holly said a lack of financial literacy is a 'huge problem' among reality stars and said there is not enough support given to people after they leave these shows.

Taking to Twitter, she wrote: 'Reality shows need to offer a financial advisor to set you up as self-employed etc.

'At 18 I didn’t even know anyone who was self employed, no idea about tax or what I needed to declare, luckily I didn’t earn a huge amount otherwise I [could've] been left in debt with a huge bill.

'I’m not asking for it to be free. I’m saying when you leave these shows you have no idea what being self-employed is.

'And having nobody to ask it would be nice to be told: “these are the steps you now need to take," rather than just being left clueless.'

Holly was then asked by a follower why reality TV stars should be given 'special treatment' when other self-employed people are not.

She responded: 'Because for the first few years I didn’t realise I even was self-employed.

'I didn’t know what it meant. I thought I was employed by MTV, and had no idea I had to sort my own tax.'

She added: 'Every other self-employed job you can Google and get advice, you can’t Google: “what to do once leaving a reality tv show” and get a list of f*****g instructions.

'Although it would be massively helpful if you could and I might create one myself.'

MailOnline has contacted MTV for further comment.

Holly's comments come shortly after the death of former Love Island contestant Mike Thalassitis, who was found dead in a wooded area near his home in Essex on March 16.

According to reports, former footballer Mike was in debt at the time of his passing.

A source told The Mirror: 'His party lifestyle came at a price and he wasn't earning a lot of cash after Love Island, especially as he became his nan's carer.'

He had also been due to open a restaurant in Essex called The Skillet with former professional footballer Scott Neilson, according to filings at Companies House.

Mike had been overseeing construction work to open his new business in a former bakery in the wealthy Essex town of Loughton.

Several reality TV stars called for greater aftercare for TV show participants after the news of his passing.

Former Love Island contestant Dom Lever wrote on Twitter: ''You get a psychological evaluation before and after you go on the show but hands down once you are done on the show you don't get any support unless you're number one.'

Malin Andersson, who lost her daughter earlier this year also hit out at the show and said she 'wouldn't have been able to cope' after the show if she didn't have a 'strong head on her'.

She said: 'If I didn't have a strong head on me that my mum passed down to me, I wouldn't have been able to cope with this all. But not everyone is like this. PLEASE IF YOU FEEL ALONE, OR SAD, OR STUCK REACH OUT TO SOMEBODY!

'Nothing when my mum died. Nothing when Sophie died. Change needs to happen.' She also urged the show to 'wake up!' and said that enough was enough.

'I got flowers from the producers when my daughter died. No f****** phone call. No support, or help.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
