«Breaking News» Friends of Claudia Lawrence light a candle to mark ten years since her disappearance

The mother of missing chef Claudia Lawrence believes she could still be alive and being held against her will - 10 years after she vanished.

Today marks 10 years to the day that Claudia disappeared from her York home at the age of 35.

On Monday afternoon, friends of Miss Lawrence gathered at York Minster to light a candle and appeal for information.

The anniversary comes amid an ongoing hunt for Hull University student Libby Squire, 21, who went missing earlier this year.

Claudia's mother Joan, 75, told Good Morning Britain her daughter could have been abducted and might still be imprisoned somewhere.

She told the programme: 'I never thought I'd be 10 years down the line with still no contact, no message.

'If Claudia was abducted, what would she have gone through? What sort of fear? What sort of trauma? If she's still alive somewhere, what is she thinking?'

Claudia was last seen at her home on March 18, 2009 and was reported missing after she failed to appear at work the next day.

Nine people have been arrested or interviewed in connection with her disappearance.

Police submitted files to the Crown Prosecution Service in relation to several men in their fifties but there is insufficient evidence to bring charges.

North Yorkshire Police earlier said the search for the University of York chef could be being hampered by people withholding vital information.

Detectives said they are still waiting for information from the public to help them make major progress.

Her mother told the York Press there are chilling similarities between the Libby Squire case and her daughter's.

She appealed to her parents Lisa and Russell to get in touch with her, saying: 'I was quite upset when I saw about Libby Squire, because she's got long, dark hair and you can't help but be reminded when you see the searches going on.

'I understand how her parents feel, know exactly where they are coming from and if they would like to get in touch with me, I'm a good listener.

'It really helps if you talk to someone in the same situation. I have a lot of friends and they are really great, but say they can't imagine what it's like.'

Meanwhile, Claudia's father Peter said the decade of uncertainty had 'destroyed his family from the inside' and that he now struggles to believe his daughter is still alive.

Mr Lawrence, a retired solicitor, said the pain was 'less raw, but no less significant', adding: 'It still eats into you, the not knowing'.

He appealed for anyone with information to come forward and 'put the family out of their misery'.

Yesterday, Detective Superintendent Dai Malyn, of North Yorkshire Police, said police 'do not believe Claudia fell victim to an attack by a stranger'.

He said: 'It remains the case that we strongly suspect key and vital information is being withheld that could provide the breakthrough that we all want to see, not least Claudia's heartbroken family.

'Unless we get information or intelligence to suggest that Claudia came to harm as a result of an opportunity taken by someone unconnected to her, the team and I still strongly believe the answer lies locally.'

Detectives arrested butcher Pawel Relowicz, 24, over Libby's disappearance and said he 'remains under investigation'.

He is to stand trial for unrelated offences after pleading not guilty to five charges of voyeurism, an indecent act and three burglaries.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
