«Breaking News» Esther McVey fuels rumours of a Tory leadership bid by going public with her MP lover Philip Davies

Brexiteer former Cabinet minister Esther McVey has boosted talk of a leadership bid after going public with her MP lover Philip Davies.

The relationship between former Work and Pensions Secretary McVey, 51, and the stubborn backbench MP for Shipley, 47, was already an open secret at Westminster.

But the Brexiteer lovers went public to confirm they are 'two individuals, but a couple' in a joint-interview with the Conservative Home website.

Mr Davies was a surprise backer of Mrs May in last week's meaningful vote which was defeated by 149 votes.

The relationship between the two MPs was an open secret at Westminster but they had not publicly acknowledged it until now

Ms McVey, the MP for Tatton, was among 75 MPs who voted against it but she has since said she would back the deal to get Brexit done.

This was despite resigning from the cabinet in November over the exact same deal.

She reiterated her previous call for Theresa May - who voted Remain in 2016 - to step down once a Brexit deal is agreed before Mr Davies stepped in to suggest a Brexiteer should replace her.

He told the website that he backed Mrs May's deal as a way to get rid of her because 'she was never going to leave without a deal'.

He said that would require a leader 'who believes in it', adding: 'It was 2005, just after I'd been elected, when I said we should leave the EU.

'I set up Better Off Out in 2006, long before it was fashionable. I've invested too much in this to lose it altogether.'

Mr Davies was previously married for 18 years. He had two sons with wife Deborah before they divorced in 2012, with him citing the pressure of his work.

Ms McVey was previously romantically linked to former culture minister Ed Vaizey.

In the interview Ms McVey also revealed that she referred to her partner not by his given name but by his surname, saying: 'No, he doesn't get a Mr. He gets just Davies.'

Colleagues say the couple have been together for around two to three years, and now have cosy side-by-side offices Portcullis House.

And they both warned about the impact for the party and the nation of a long delay to Brexit.

Mr Davies said: 'I suspect that if she (Mrs May) hasn't got her deal through she will go for the longest possible extension.

'My fear is that we're going to have a long extension of Article 50, and Lord knows what's going to happen then.

'The chances are we may never leave. I just think the public would never trust the Conservative Party again.

It would be curtains for the Conservative Party if we had a long extension.'

Ms McVey added: 'For me it's bigger than that. The public voted out.

'Not to do that democratic vote and to think there would be no repercussions is, well, as Philip would say, for the birds. There will be repercussions.'

In a blunt intervention on Sunday, Ms McVey became the most senior figure so far to warn that the price of winning Eurosceptic support for the Prime Minister's deal might be her resignation.

She said the 'feeble negotiators' who delivered the deal must not be allowed to oversee the next round of negotiations.

She told Sky News that Mrs May 'will have to decide what to do', adding: 'What people will be asking for is for those feeble negotiators to go because they cannot take us forward to the next stage.'

She praised the Prime Minister's 'dedication' but, when asked if she should resign, she added: 'I think that what is best for her is, really only she knows.

'But what I do know is we as a party want to be able to thank her. She needs a dignified departure, so however that works best for her.'

Ms McVey has served as the MP for Tatton since 2017, and was the MP for Wirral West in the House of Commons from 2010 to 2015.

Born in Liverpool, Ms McVey was a business woman and television presenter, co-hosting GMTV with Eamonn Holmes, before she moved into politics.

In between her stints as an MP, she served as chair of the British Transport Police Authority and had part-time roles as a special adviser to two investment firms.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
