«Breaking News» Emmerdale's controversial grooming storyline between Maya and Jacob sparks 60 Ofcom complaints

Enraged Emmerdale viewers have complained to Ofcom after shocking scenes aired showing teacher Maya Stepney having sex with her teen student Jacob Gallagher.

Fans of the ITV1 pre-watershed soap were not impressed with episodes earlier this week, which saw Maya (Louisa Clein) continue to groom Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant), culminating in them sleeping together.

60 viewers have filed complaints with Ofcom after the scenes aired between February 27 and March 4.

Fans have watched the cold and calculating Maya groom Jacob over the last few months, waiting until he had turned 16 before she made her move.

However, some found the scene where the pair slept together in a seedy hotel room too much to bear and complained to the regulator.

An Ofcom spokesperson told MailOnline: 'We are assessing these complaints against our broadcasting rules, before deciding whether or not to investigate.'

The shocking scenes came about after Maya and boyfriend David were supposed to spend a romantic evening together in a hotel, which she had actually booked for Jacob as a 'birthday treat'.

But after their night away was ruined, due to David finding their hotel receipt, a jealous Jacob decided to sabotage his father's overnight stay by messing up an order back at his farm shop. 

Jacob's plan worked as David called Maya to reveal he'd be late, causing an argument between the pair which resulted in the teacher telling him not to bother coming.

However, this left the path clear for Jacob to show up at the hotel and spend the night with Maya, with an unaware David left drinking at the pub.

Fans took to social media to discuss the controversial storyline with one tweeting: 'Can we please hurry up and end the Jake and Maya story line. It's making me feel sick'. 

Reaction: Viewers took to Twitter to express their horror at the unfolding storyline between Maya and Jacob 

Another said: 'Sorry but I'm really not enjoying the story line between Jacob and Maya.'

One fan wrote: Jacob and Maya. End this story line #Emmerdale.'

Another said: 'Bit pervy #Emmerdale at the moment, gone too far. Maya must be 40 odd in real life and Jacob 17. Gone too far for 7pm me thinks.'

However, others thought the story was one that needed to be told.

'A story that has to be told': Some viewers spoke out in support of the soap, saying the storyline is part of an important discussion and 'well acted'

A viewer said: 'Admittedly, I was watching the Maya and Jacob scene through my fingers but it's a story that has to be told in a way that will make viewers notice and really pay attention.

'If you're outraged, congratulations, you're normal. #Emmerdale'.

Another viewer in support of the story line wrote: 'I'm sure I'm in the minority but I think Maya & Jacob is a great storyline - and really well acted.

'It's actually the only interest thing going on in #Emmerdale at the moment.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
