In his most famous role as Del Boy, he would never say no to a challenge.

And Only Fools And Horses star Sir David Jason seemed to take heed of the wheeler dealer as he tried out a host of dangerous stunts for his new transport series.

The veteran actor, 79, threw caution to the wind as he was tasked with travelling from Seattle to Los Angeles in a series on the heritage of American transport, David Jason: Planes, Trains & Automobiles.

Far from being put off by filming the show, the septuagenarian developed a thirst for extreme sports, confessing he enjoyed stunt-car racing and a helicopter ride over a volcano.

He told The Mirror:  'One of the things I learned was that I really enjoyed stunt-car driving.

'The producers told me we were going to see this stunt driver on a skid pan, and I thought, 'That's interesting.' The next thing, they were saying to me, 'We want you to do it.' But I coped because I understand vehicles and I like driving.'

Sir David also enjoyed taking a helicopter ride over the active Mount St Helens volcano, confessing: 'That was scary, but exhilarating.'

The series will see Sir David travel 1,200 miles across length of the west coast of America from Seattle in Washington to Los Angeles.

Whilst viewers may be surprised to see him take on such extreme tasks, Sir David revealed he's always been a daredevil, telling The Telegraph: 'I've always loved to fly, but I couldn't afford it when I started out.

'So I found a cheaper alternative – and that was gliding. I was in a play in the West End and on Sunday, which was my day off, I used to take my girlfriend for a drive. We would sit and watch the gliders at Dunstable Downs [in Bedfordshire]. I kept lusting after them, going "it must be wonderful".

'She must have been sick of hearing about it because, one day, she said "well why don't you go and learn?". So I did, and got my pilot's licence to fly gliders.'

Sir David is best known for his role in Only Fools and Horses, which has recently been adapted into a musical.

The star was notably absent from the musical's premiere last month, but the creator and actors evealed the TV show's biggest star stayed away from their opening night so as not to pile pressure on the cast.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain the show's co-creator, comedy writer Paul Whitehouse, said 'Del Boy' was doing his cast a kindness by staying away.

He told hosts Adil Ray, 44, and Ranvir Singh, 41: 'David Jason was very gracious, he said he’d keep away on opening night.

Tom Bennett, who plays Del Boy on stage, chimed in to agree with host Ranvir saying: ‘He does know the pressure.

‘The last thing I want is to start selling to the front row, and have “Del Boy” there.

‘It might throw my game a bit’, he added laughing.

Asked by Adil how he approaches the role, Tom added: ‘Goodness knows knows you approach it. With bravery and stupidity.

‘But yeah, they’re huge, huge, shoes to fill and , you know, it’s quite terrifying. It’s a daunting task and there’s a lot of pressure, but I’m so privileged and honoured to have this pressure.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
