«Breaking News» Certified Master KonMari Consultant shares tips for maximising wardrobe space

A professional tidier who trained under Marie Kondo has shared her top tips for de-cluttering your home.

Karin Socci, 56, from New York, was a clinical psychotherapist before being trained by global sensation Kondo in her KonMari Method and became the first student to receive the highest level of certification.

Here Socci, founder of company The Serene Home, reveals the four ways you can streamline your space, from your kitchen cupboard to sloppy piles of clothes.

SORT AND EDIT

Karin advises sorting and editing storage spaces as often times people have plenty of shoes and clothes that either don't fit or are now past their prime.

She says once you've gotten rid of excess it becomes possible to make certain things visible and accessible.

'Most people find they have purchased lots of bins and baskets over the years and it didn't help them stay organized, so the solution is not to go to the Container Store, buy a bunch of tubs and toss things inside.

'Sorting and editing first is key. But, then if you do need items to keep things tidy, small bins or boxes that divide up drawer spaces can be very helpful.'

USE VERTICAL SPACE

The Serene Home founder says most people could use shelving to create space up high for things they don't use very often.

'In KonMari, we teach vertical folding. It's the technique of folding things into rectangular shapes and then lining them up vertically on a shelf or drawer instead of stacking them horizontally.

'If you have a huge stack of sweaters stacked on top of each other, then its impossible to get to the bottom one without toppling over the entire pile.

'So you either never wear those things that are on the bottom, or your clothes end up in a messy pile. Think of organizing clothes like a row of books or soldiers in formation.'

MAXIMISE PRIME STORAGE REAL ESTATE

'In KonMari, we say that life begins after you have your home in order. Of course, that isn’t actually the case, but most people find that they have new found time and energy when their homes support their day to day needs.

'There is a statistic that say we spend an average of an hour a day looking for things, a key fob here, a wallet there, where is my watch?...it’s takes up a lot of time that could be put to better use.

'My goal for my clients is that when they wake in the morning and come in at the end of the day, they are able to feel calm and peaceful instead of anxious about what they need to do to get things in order.

'Anything you use daily, should be in the 'prime storage real estate', the shelves that are within arm's reach, closets, cupboards and cabinets that are most accessible.

'Don't keep your holiday decoration in your coat closet by the front door. Only clothing and shoes you need the most should be in those spaces.'

STORE ITEMS IN YOUR SUITCASE

Karin recommends storing items used for travelling in your suitcase as it fills empty space and makes it easy to find essentials when it's time to pack.

Karin says every home is different and people are often embarrassed by the condition of their home although even the most organised individuals have room for improvement.

She recommends seeking help from a professional organiser who is trained or certified by a professional group.

In New York rates for a professional organiser range from $75 to $125 an hour.

Karin who runs The Serene Home advises choosing an organizer with a good personality as it's critical when you're working so closely with someone.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
