With motor manufacturers always striving to get the upper hand on the competition, the advent of new technology gives them a great opportunity to prove why they are the best option for consumers.
And many are developing auto-braking and pedestrian-avoidance technologies to show they can be the safest on the road.
So BMW's poor performance in a report by the US-based Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) will make for uncomfortable reading at the company's Munich HQ.
The IIHS put the BMW X1 alongside models from Honda, Subaru, Toyota, Volvo, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Nissan and Mitsubishi. And results were disastrous.
The BMW X1 smashes into a dummy during one of the tests and breaks it in two
Test footage shows the X1, which comes with a pedestrian detection system, failing to reduce speed when a dummy walks out into the road.
Only four out of 11 cars managed to score the best, superior rating. The BMW X1 was tested in scenarios at 12mph, 25mph and 37mph and failed to brake at all in the fastest one, and had 'minimal to no speed reduction' in the others.
Video filmed a the test track in Arlington, Virginia, show dummies moving across the road as a car fitted with the system approaches them.
When the BMW X1 drives towards the dummy it doesn't appear to slow down at all, completely smashing into the pretend person and snapping it in two.
The IIHS said: 'The X1, which comes with BMW's Daytime Pedestrian Detection system, didn't brake at all in the 37 mph parallel adult scenario. The luxury SUV had minimal to no speed reductions in the other tests.'
During the test the cars were confronted with three common pedestrian scenarios.
The Honda CR-V, 2019 Subaru Forester, 2019 Toyota RAV4 and 2019 Volvo XC40 all earned the highest rating of superior after the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's tests
In the first an adult appears on the right side of the road and walks infront of an oncoming vehicle.
The second was of a child appearing in the road from between two parked cars. The 45-inch-tall dummy used was supposed to represent an average seven-year-old.
David Aylor, the Institute's manager of Active Safety Testing, said: 'As a dad, I know this is every parent's nightmare.'
The third test scenario replicates an adult walking in the vehicle's travel lane near the edge of the road. The adult's back is turned away from traffic.
Mr Aylor said: 'The best possible outcome is to avoid hitting a pedestrian altogether.
'When a crash is unavoidable, sharply reducing a vehicle's travel speed would give someone on foot a far greater chance of surviving any injuries in a similar real-world encounter with a passenger vehicle.'
The 2018–19 Honda CR-V, 2019 Subaru Forester, 2019 Toyota RAV4 and 2019 Volvo XC40 all earned the highest rating of superior.

Five models earn an advanced rating. They are the 2019 Chevrolet Equinox, 2018–19 Hyundai Kona, 2019 Kia Sportage, 2018–19 Mazda CX-5 and 2019 Nissan Rogue.
The 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander was rated basic, and the 2018–19 BMW X1 didn't receive any credit for a rating.
Pedestrian detection is standard on the Forester, RAV4, Rogue, X1 and XC40.
The IIHC explain how detection systems usually use a forward-facing camera or stereo cameras mounted near the rearview mirror plus radar sensors in the vehicle's front grille to scan the road and horizon for pedestrians.
They can also look out for cyclists or animals, who might cross the vehicle's path.
If a collision is imminent, the system typically alerts the driver and can apply the brakes far faster than a human could react.
BMW has been approached by MailOnline for a comment.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
