«Breaking News» Apple's future handsets could warn you of high levels of toxic gases

Apple's next gadget could save your life, if a patent applied for by the firm is anything to go by.

The next watch or iPhone from the company may come equipped with a sensor that can warn you of high levels of pollution, toxic gas and alcohol in your breath.

Apple has been granted a new batch of patents for its products, including one for a material that senses bad smelling odours.

It could be used in a watch strap and incorporated into future iPhone and laptops.

The material will have multiple sensors detect everything from dangerous carbon monoxide levels, to pollution, to 'vaporous gas' which could detect how much alcohol is in someone's breath.

Apple was granted a submission for an 'electronic devices with environmental sensors', accordin to the approvals list from the US Patent & Trademark Office,

It is the fifth of such patents under the same heading applied for by Apple since 2015, according to the blog Patently Apple.

The document describing the patent submission described it as: 'a gas sensor attached to the printed circuit that is configured to measure a concentration of a gas, wherein the gas comprises a gas selected from the group consisting of: carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, alcohol vapour, propane, ozone, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, benzene, methane, hydrogen, and oxygen'.

The blog also listed devices that it could be used in as: 'Cellular telephones, media players, other handheld portable devices, somewhat smaller portable devices such as wrist-watch devices, pendant devices, or other wearable or miniature devices, gaming equipment, tablet computers, notebook computers, desktop computers, televisions, computer monitors, computers integrated into computer displays, or other electronic equipment.'

One of patent notes showed, via in a diagram,  that the sensor could be place in the microphone or the speaker.

The feature is part of Apple's drive into data driven healthcare, that may see an Apple watch launched next year that can tell you how to get a better night's sleep.

The iPhone maker has been testing a sleep-tracking feature at its Cupertino, California headquarters that could arrive in the fifth-generation Apple Watch in 2020, Bloomberg reported, citing sources close to the situation.

It comes as Apple has increasingly signaled that it hopes to position the Watch as a health and fitness device.

In another study by the health insurer Vitality, it was found that Apple watches could add two years to your life.

Volunteers were more physically active when they used an Apple Watch paired with a reward scheme, compared to those without.

Researchers found participants had 4.8 extra days of activity per month, which they said translates into two extra years of life.

The largest improvements were seen among those who were overweight and those who were the least active to begin with, the study on 400,000 people showed.

HOW CAN THE APPLE WATCH DETECT A PROBLEM WITH YOUR HEART?

Apple has announced that its new smart watch, Apple Watch 4, has the built in capability to take an EKG (or ECG) to great fanfare

The heart tracking test is used to diagnose life-threatening arrythmias.

In a hospital or clinical setting, an electrocardiogram is a crucial diagnostic tool for heart disease and arrhythmias.

The test monitors the heart's electrical activity through electrode sensors placed on the chest and, sometimes, limbs.

It is also the go-to diagnostic tool for medics responding to a suspected heart attack.

The feature of the new watch is 'cleared' but not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Having this seal of approval lends the product consumer trust - but comes with limits that don't apply to products that are FDA approved - the true regulatory gold standard.

Apple's health technology has clearance from the FDA for people over 22 to use it, but, technically, no one younger than that should have the device.

What's more, the Apple ECG is not intended for people who have been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation - the group at greatest risk of the heart rhythm abnormalities the feature is meant to detect.

Studies - including one from Stanford University, which has now partnered with Apple for an ongoing heart study - have shown that the device is 98 percent accurate.

It has caused controversy among cardiologists and experts.

Apple has been granted a new ...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
