«Breaking News» Iron Age Celts rubbed OIL into the severed heads of their victims to preserve them

Celts in the Iron Age rubbed oil into the heads of their victims after cutting them off to stop them rotting, it has been revealed.

Ancient writings often mention the beheadings, with the severed skulls kept as trophies - but until now, researchers had not known how they were preserved.

The new study of over 100 fragmented human skulls were found buried in a French town found plant oils were key to the embalming efforts.

HOW THE CELTS PREPARED THEIR 'TROPHY HEADS'

After killing an enemy, the head was decapitated

The brain and tongue were then removed

Head were then dipped in cedar oil or a local pinacea oil

Finally, they were displayed outside a home, with the weapon that killed them

Pinaceae oil was applied several times during the lifetime of the heads display to continue to preserve it

Researchers believe the heads were put on display to mark the 'bravery and strength of the community and of its warriors.'

'Ancient texts described that one of the most impressive ritual practices of the Celts during the Iron Age was to remove the heads of enemies killed in battle and to embalm them for display in front of the victors dwellings,' the researchers wrote in the Journal of Archaeological Science.

Weapons were also exhibited alongside the severed heads, they said.

The gruesome discoveries were made in an open area of Le Cailar, France– a 2,500 year–old town on the Rhone River.

The skulls, which were discovered among ancient weapons in the walled village, date back to the 3rd century B.C., when Le Cailar was a Celtic settlement, and the team believe the heads may have been on display until the area was covered in dirt around 200 BC.

'Many of the skulls bore cut marks, not only of decapitation, but also to preparing the heads for display by the removal of cervical vertebrae and aperture of the postero-inferior portion of the cranium, probably - to remove the brain; and tongue ablation, or at least the scraping of the muscles under the mandible,' the team wrote.

Researchers from the University Paul–Valery Montpellier crushed small parts of the skulls to analyze, and found chemicals suggesting heads may have possibly been dipped in cedar oil or a local pinacea oil after the brain was removed for embalming.

The researchers who analyzed the fragments believe the heads were for the locals to gaze upon as the skulls were found inside Le Cailar, as opposed to outside the town walls where they could be put on display to frighten attackers.

They also found It is also possible that Pinaceae oil was applied several times, during the lifetime of the heads display, in order to continue to preserve the head.

'Thanks to this study, we demonstrated that some of the severed heads displaying in this Iron Age fortified settlement were embalmed,' the team concluded.

'This corroborated with the documentation by both literary sources and archaeology that the Celtic people removed the heads of their enemies slain on the battlefield and that they exhibited them in public spaces.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
