«Breaking News» Fat rat that got wedged in a manhole cover had to be freed by nine firefighters in Germany

A portly rat carrying some extra winter weight managed to get stuck in a drain cover and had to be rescued by nine firefighters.

The rotund rodent was spotted by two young girls in the town of Bensheim, Germany, on Sunday afternoon who then called the emergency services.

Nine firefighters and animal rescuers arrived at the scene to prise the chubby rat from the tight squeeze.

When rescuers arrived they were greeted by the unfortunate flabby animal wriggling and squeaking in the manhole cover, trying to free itself from the tiny gap.

A firefighter used a animal capture noose to grab hold of the rat as other rescuers lifted up the cover with crowbars.

They managed to free the struggling the distressed creature by wedging the manhole cover open to push the rat through.

As the cover was pulled up, the rat's dangling legs and tail could been in a video taken by firefighters.

Once the rodent was freed, the firefighters dropped it back down the sewer.

Michael Sehr, an animal rescuer in Rhein Neckar was first on the scene but could not free the chunky rodent and so called on firefighters to finished the job.

He told German broadcaster DW: 'She had a lot of winter flab and was stuck fast at her hip - there was no going forward or back.

'Even animals that are hated by many deserve respect.'

Local resident, Knut, was on his way back home to his wife Juliana and his two daughters when he suddenly spotted the rat in the manhole cover on the middle of the road.

Juliana said: 'When my husband came home, he thought that the rat was just sitting there at first.'

Only after taking a closer look did he realise that the chubby rat was in fact stuck inside the cover.

Images show the rat stuck in a drainage hole in a manhole cover, appearing to cry to for help.

Juliana said: 'At first we tried to free the animal ourselves. We took leather working gloves and tried to carefully twist it out of the hole.

'It was terrified, screamed terribly, and bit into the glove.'

Even though Juliana thought it would be easier to pull out the rat once it had bitten its teeth firmly into the glove, they still did not manage to release it.

The family called in the help of Mr Sehr of the Professional Animal Rescue Rhein-Neckar.

Mr Sehr immediately informed a friend from the local fire brigade, who also came to the scene with nine firefighters.

He added: 'When the manhole cover was completely raised, I was able to free the rat with a twisting motion. It immediately dashed back to the sewers.'

It reportedly took Mr Sehr and the firefighters just three minutes to rescue the rat.

Mr Sehr said the rat, which normally can weigh up to 650 grams (22 ozs), was one of the heavier ones he had ever encountered and said that the large rat had lots of 'winterspeck' or 'winter fat' on its body.

And even though the rescue mission would normally be billed at €120 (£103) nobody had to pay for it.

Mr Sehr said: 'It was an unbureaucratic act on a Sunday. Since we have no contract with the municipality, we have simply acted under the Animal Welfare Act and saved the animal.

'The guys from the fire department are good buddies, they simply handled it with me.'

As a reward, the two daughters aged two and seven of Juliana and Knut made some drawings of the rat, surrounded by hearts, and gave them to Mr Sehr and the firefighters.

When the pictures and video of the rescue were posted on Facebook, they were praised for helping the animal which is often killed by pest exterminators.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
