«Breaking News» Colorado runner Travis Kauffman relives mountain lion attack

The brave Colorado man who killed a mountain lion with his bare hands reveals how not wearing ear buds saved his life and how he tumbled off the trail with the giant cat and suffocated it with his foot.

Travis Kauffman, 31, was attacked by a wild mountain lion as he was running along a Horsetooth Mountain Park trail in Fort Collins, Colorado on February 4 and killed it by pinning the cat down and choking it.

With just a scar to his cheek Kauffman said, 'I'm feeling great. I'm pretty much 100 percent,' on the Today show on Tuesday. 'The only thing I have to recover is numbness in my fingers but other than that – I’m shipshape.'

Just three weeks after the attack Kauffman is looking healthy and confident, a far cry from how he emerged from the wild lion encounter suffering bloody lacerations and scratches to his face, neck, arms, and legs, requiring about 20 stitches to recover.

He was joined on the morning show with his girlfriend who revealed she wasn't surprised that her boyfriend was able survive the lion attack.

'I was just like what?! There was so much disbelief. Not really understanding how big of a deal it was but also it's sort of like…of course you did that,' Annie Bierbouer said with a laugh.

Reliving the life-threatening attack, Kauffman says it all started when he heard a rustle of pine needles and realized it was a mountain lion sneaking up on him about 10 feet away.

'I heard it [tree branch breaking], and then I turned, and it was one of those things where my stomach just dropped. I was thinking I can't believe this is happening. This is real. Oh, crap…it was running at me, at which point I just pretty much threw my hands in the air and started yelling,' he said.

He noted he wasn't wearing ear phones as he was on his run, something he believes ended up saving his life.

'I think if I had ear buds in I wouldn't have heard the stick crack, and I wouldn't have turned, and in that case I think the fight would have been very different, just for the fact it could have latched onto the back of my neck, and I don't know how I would have been able to get the cat off in that case,' he said.

After seeing the cat run towards him, it jumped on top of him and latched onto his wrist with its mouth and menacing sharp teeth.

'First I threw my hands up to block my face, and he just jumped and latched right onto my wrist, and then started clawing and so he got a claw through my lip, and then a claw on my face, and that's kind of when I really had that instinct to fight back, like kick in full force,' Kauffman said.

The experienced hiker tried desperately to shake off the creature but couldn't as its teeth were lodged into his wrist and its claws were dug into his back, 'so we just kind of tumbled off of the trail together'.

He said he was able to get on top of the cat and despite efforts to desperately hit it in the neck with anything he could find including rocks and sticks, he realized his greatest weapon was his foot.

'I was able to kind of preposition…I was kind of crouched on top of it, so imagine my wrist in its mouth and then I pinned its back legs with my left knee so I wouldn't get scratched on that end, and I was able to kind of swing my right leg around, some twister movement right there,' he said.

The mountain lion attack made headlines earlier this month, but the man behind the attack remained a mystery until February 14 when Colorado Parks and Wildlife released a video of Kauffman explaining the incident and retracing his steps to the attack site (above)

Finally he stepped on the lion's neck with right foot for a few exhausting minutes, which Kauffman said felt like 10 years.

'There were moments when it would periodically stop moving then start thrashing again. So a couple of those cycles and then finally I felt pretty convinced that it was done and it finally released my hand at that point,' he said.

Then he bolted away from the creature for help.

'I was on a crazy fear high,' he said on the fight,' he said during his first press conference on the attack on February 14.

He ran a total of three miles to exit the park and found another runner and park visitor who helped him and gave him a ride to the hospital.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
