Wayne Hennessey has denied accusations that he was performing a 'Nazi salute' during a picture while he was out for a meal with his Crystal Palace team-mates on Saturday evening.
The 31-year-old was accused by some of mimicking the offensive gesture after being pictured on Max Meyer's Instagram story at the far end of the table while the Eagles squad celebrated their win over Grimsby in the FA Cup.
On Sunday evening, Hennessey took to Twitter to explain that he 'waved and shouted at the person taking the picture to get on with it' and used his hand to cover his mouth so the 'sound would carry'.
Wayne Hennessey was accused of performing a 'Nazi salute' in a photo on Saturday evening
The 31-year-old goalkeeper denied the accusations on Sunday evening on his Twitter account
The Wales international wrote: 'Yesterday evening I had a meal with my team-mates and we had a grouph photograph. I waved and shouted at the person taking the picture to get on with it and at the same time put my hand over my mouth to make the sound carry.
'It’s been brought to my attention that frozen in a moment by the camera this looks like I am making a completely inappropriate type of salute.
'I can assure everyone I would never ever do that and any resemblance to that kind of gesture is absolutely coincidental. Love and peace Wayne.'
Hennessey in action for Palace against Manchester United earlier this season
The Mirror said the goalkeeper was set to face serious questions from his employers after the photo caught the attention of fans on Twitter.
While the picture was posted on Saturday night, it has since been deleted with photos on Instagram stories expiring after 24 hours.
Hennessey recently lost his place in the Eagles' starting XI to Vicente Guaita but managed to feature for the full 90 minutes in the FA Cup win over the Mariners.
Jordan Ayew scored the winning goal four minutes from time as Grimsby almost held on for a replay despite being down to 10 men from the second minute after Andrew Fox saw red.
Palace have won their last three games in the Premier League and are six points clear of the relegation places.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
