«Breaking News» A professional cleaner outlines exactly what parts of your home you're failing to clean

While many homeowners are diligent with their cleaning, there are areas that even the most meticulous people can forget about.

As a result, many of us are surrounded by far more bacteria, harmful mould particles and dusty surfaces than we realise.

The owner of an Australian professional cleaning service, Maid in Melbourne, has revealed some of the most commonly ignored parts of the home and has shared what happens when they are left dirty for long periods of time.

'Many of these things that you would assume people would be doing, they are not. Sometimes they look at the bigger picture and don't notice the little things that need doing,' Rita Dossis, of Maid in Melbourne, told Domain

Door and cupboard handles and light switches

Although they may seem like obvious spots to clean, door handles, cupboard handles and light switches are top of the list of areas that are neglected around the home.

Luckily they don't take long to clean with Ms Dossis recommending a quick wipe with a damp cloth.

Shower

Although many people think the shower is one of the cleanest areas of the home, they are wrong.

According to Ms Dossis this is one of the most neglected areas because many people think it 'cleans itself'.

She said: 'Clean this at least fortnight. We had a client who thought his shower glass was opaque. After we cleaned it [spending over one hour on it] he called us to say he had not realised the glass was clear.'

Lisa Ackerley, visiting professor in environmental health at the University of Salford, recommends the shower curtain should be cleaned every two days.

She said the shower curtains provide ideal conditions for the growth of mould, which can release spores that trigger respiratory problems.

'And if you live in a hard water area, it is easier for bacteria to stick to the limescale on the walls,' she said.

Ms Dossis recommends opening windows to stop the build-up of mould and using bleach to get rid of it.

Microwave

Microwaves are one of the most used appliances in the kitchen but are rarely cleaned enough. Ms Dossis has a quick and easy way to resolve that.

She said: 'Get a small bowl, put about one cup of water in it with maybe ½ cup white vinegar and then put on high for 4-5 minutes. Leave it for about 10-15 minutes, then open the door and wipe it out.'

For those who use their microwave regularly this should be done every few days.

How often should you be cleaning your appliances and kitchen items?

Sink: Daily

Counter  tops: Daily

Floor: Daily (minimum once a week)

Appliance surfaces: Once a week (including fridge doors, toaster and coffee maker)

Drain: Monthly (with baking soda and table salt)

Splashback: Monthly

Cutting boards: Monthly

Fridge coils: Every three to six months

Oven racks: Every three to six months (minimum once a year)

Range filters: Whenever you use it, replace every six to eight months

The dish drying rack

Most people don't think of cleaning their dish drying rack but soap scum and mould build up on the bottom of it.

Ms Dossis also recommends that everyone replace their sponge regularly and wash their tea towels weekly, even if they don't look dirty.

Filters on your range hood

The range hood, also known as an exhaust hood and extractor hood, above the stove or cooktop contains a mechanical fan and filters.

As the fan removes grease, fumes, smoke, heat and steam from the air the metal filters accumulate grime - but are often overlooked.

They can easily be put through the dishwasher or washed in a sink with boiling hot water and detergent.

How often you clean them depends on the how often you cook - some manufacturers recommend every three to four months.

Toothbrush holders

According to a 2011 study by US-based public health organisation NSF International the toothbrush holder is the third most germ-infected item in the home.

This is due to bacteria from food and saliva on your toothbrush, as well as the yeast and mould that form on moist and wet surfaces.

'Give it a good clean regularly, you don’t want to be putting your toothbrush into something that is breeding,' Ms Dossis says.

Toothbrush holders should be cleaned every fortnight by rinsing under hot water and scrubbing inside with a bottle brush or pipe cleaner, says Professor Damian Walmsley, scientific adviser to the British Dental Association.

Rubbish bin lid

The lid on the waste bin is a haven for bacteria or particles of food so should be cleaned daily.

Spray it with disinfectant, then wipe with a paper towel once a day, advises Sally Bloomfield, chairman of the International Scientific Forum on Home Hygiene.

Cushions

Cushions can harbour dust mites so should be cleaned every three months.

Either have them professionally cleaned, says Dr Jean Emberlin, Allergy UK scientific director, or place them in a carrier bag and put this in the freezer for 24 hours.

‘This will kill the dust mites — then, once you take the cushions out and defrost them, just go over them with a vacuum on a high power to get rid of the dead mites.’

Television remote

A 2008 University of Virginia study of household surfaces showed the remote control was a hotspot for cold viruses — which can survive on surfaces for up to two days.

What’s more, TV remotes have lots of nooks and crannies where bacteria can linger and are hard to reach with a cursory clean.

The remote should be cleaned regularly, ideally every day, with an antibacterial wipe.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
