The European Union's border agency says the number of unauthorised border crossings into Europe has hit a five-year low, although migrant entries into Spain via the Mediterranean continue to climb.
Frontex said people crossed the EU's external borders without authorisation around 150,000 times last year, a 25% drop compared with 2017 and far below the peak of over a million in 2015.
The border and coast guard agency said the drop is due to a massive decrease in the number of people entering Italy, mostly after setting out from Libya and Algeria.

Just over 23,000 unauthorised crossings were noted on that route this year, an 80% drop since last year and the fewest since 2012.
Italy's anti-immigration populist government has taken measures to prevent rescued boats docking on its shores since it came to power in March of 2018.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Matteo Salvini has previously said Italy has done 'more than anyone else' to take in sea borne migrants and that it is now 'someone else's turn.'

Frontex also said about 57,000 crossings were detected in Spain, double the figure for 2017 and the most of any country in the EU, making the route from Morocco to the Iberian Peninsula the most active in Europe.
Arrivals in Greece and Cyprus through the so-called Eastern Mediterranean route rose to 56,000 last year, with most of the refugees coming from Afghanistan, Syria or Iraq.

EU nations have been arguing over how to manage new arrivals since more than a million people entered in 2015.
They have failed to agree on a permanent mechanism to relocate those who reach Europe's shores.
Some 113,482 migrants crossed the Mediterranean to reach Europe last year, according to the UN refugee agency, which said 2,262 people lost their lives or went missing making the perilous journey.
Meanwhile rights activists today accused European countries on Friday of a new 'record of shame' for refusing to open ports to migrant children and families stranded at sea in the Mediterranean for two weeks.
Thirty-two migrants including a baby and several children were rescued off Malta by a Sea-Watch rescue boat on December 22 remain at sea after being denied entry to European ports.
'It's now been 14 days left alone at sea. A new record of shame,' the Mediterranea collective of aid groups and associations said on Twitter.
Mediterranea and Sea-Watch launched two boats on Friday to deliver supplies, including fresh water, to Sea-Watch 3, a Dutch-flagged vessel.
As the help party arrived, 'one of the migrants threw himself into the water in an attempt to swim to Malta', said an onboard freelance photographer, Federico Scoppa.
'After a few meters, he gave up because of the cold and the current, and was dragged back to the ship using a lifebuoy,' Scoppa told AFP.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
