Blanchett, 49, is starring alongside Game Of Thrones' Stephen Dillane in the production, which features explicit simulations of sexual acts including an orgy in a car.
The play, which sees six characters 'acting out a dangerous game of sexual domination and resistance,' also features graphic violence against women.
An elderly woman was taken to hospital after fainting during the show on Wednesday night.
Tickets for the show starring the A-list actor (pictured in October) are available via ballot only, given the high demand
While it remains unclear what caused her to pass out, the theatre subsequently sent an warning to email to other ticket holders about the graphic nature of the production, according to The Times.
Audience member Samuel Tucker said it was 'sexually explicit and incredibly violent'.
He told the Times: 'The whole thing is a bit much, to be honest.
'It is so in-your-face violent and so in-your-face sexual and if you are not about that life, it might come across as shocking.'
Talking to The Guardian earlier this month, Blanchett said, 'some people might be enraged, some perplexed, some people might be excited' by the play.
She told the paper she saw theatre as a 'provocation', adding: 'Hopefully it's the conversation afterwards that's the most important.'
The hotly-anticipated show has seen people queue outside the London box office from 3am in the morning to get their hands on cheap tickets.
Demand for the show starring the A-list actor was so high they are now available via ballot only.
Some fans eager to see the star have travelled from America to watch the show while others have been setting up camp outside the Dorfman Theatre to get their hands on tickets.
Samule Tucker wrote on Twitter: 'For the first time in my life, I am going to the loony who queues outside from crazy O clock to get me a ticket for When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other at the National Theatre.'
The National Theatre has sent an email to ticket holders warning them about the show
Another fan tweeted: 'If When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other doesn't have a New York transfer. I will cry.'
According to the National Theatre, the play 'explores the messy, often violent nature of desire and the fluid, complicated roles that men and women play'.
The play is based on Samuel Richardson's 1740 novel, Pamela, during which 'six characters act out a dangerous game of sexual domination and resistance'.
The production, written by Martin Crimp, is set to run for six weeks at the Dorfman Theatre from January 16 to March 2 next year.
It has been a busy creative period for Cate, with the two-time Oscar winner recently signing on to star in the new FX limited series Mrs America.
A spokesman for the National Theatre said: 'We send a standard pre-visit email to patrons attending the next day's performance, confirming start times, length, ticket details and reiterating any warnings already carried on our website, for all productions at the National Theatre.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
