A gynecologist who is known for challenging bizarre treatments has revealed commonly-sold products women should never use on their vaginas.
Dr. Jen Gunter, an OB/GYN and a New York Times columnist, has previously spoken out against Gwenyth Paltrow's wellness site Goop for controversially suggestion women place jade eggs up their vaginas to improve the pelvic floor.
In an interview with Today, the San Francisco-based doctor explained why she felt it was important to debunk treatments and myths that could be harmful to a woman's health.
Revealed: Dr. Jen Gunter, an OB/GYN in San Franciso, California, explained four items that are never in her medicine cabinet to use on her vagina
'It is so hard to spot the misinformation,' she told the online site. 'Women should be demanding facts and they should be demanding quality information. They should be free to do whatever they want with their bodies. But they should always been vigilant as to why people are giving them what information.'
To better help women better understand their bodies, Dr. Gunter wrote a book entitled The Vagina Bible: The Vulva and the Vagina: Separating the Myth from the Medicine.
The book lists out items Dr. Gunter has banned from her medicine cabinet because of how they can be damaging to the vagina.
Douches, an item banned from Dr. Gunter's medicine cabinet, were described as the 'cigarettes' for the vagina.
'They offer zero health benefits and increase the likelihood of getting an STI,' she said.
Dr. Gunter explained how some women believe using a douche will prevent bacteria growth and help with odor, but she said it could actually do just the opposite.
Another product Dr. Gunter keeps away from her medical cabinet is flushable wipes for the vagina. Similar to douches, these wipes can disrupt the good bacteria in the vagina and instead cause itchiness and odor.
Speaking of itchiness, another product to avoid is any product that contains benzocaine as an active ingredient. These formulas, which more often than not are found as a cream, can actually make the effected area worse, rather than better.
Important: The doctor (pictured) advised women to avoid using douches or wipes to clean their vaginas. She also said to use a fresh razor each time while shaving
'With benzocaine women get a temporary improvement and they think it works,' Dr. Gunter said.
'But then it gets worse and they put more on and it gets worse and they get so inflamed.'
Lidocaine is a recommended over-the-counter treatment for women to treat itchiness instead of using benzocaine.
The fourth product Dr. Gunter keeps away from her medicine cabinet is old and rusty razors and tweezers.
'There are a lot of genital track injuries from grooming,' she said.
Dr. Gunter recommends making sure the tweezers and razors are clean before grooming any intimate areas.
Also, she said the safest way to remove hair is to use trimmers and then a fresh razor with shaving cream or gel.
Using a new razor each time shaving doesn't always happen for women, which is why Dr. Gunter also implores women to consider waxing instead.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
