«Breaking News» Anti-abortion crowds gather in Washington DC for the annual March for Life event

Large crowds of activists and lawmakers made their way to the US capital on Friday for the annual rally against abortion called the March for Life.

Anti-abortion protesters gathered on the National Mall near the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision, Roe v. Wade, that legalized the procedure on January 22, 1973, for what the website bills as 'the world's largest pro-life event.'

The first march took place on the west steps of the Capitol in January 1974, the year after the landmark decision.

45 years later, thousands braved the cold to attend Friday's event themed 'Unique from Day One' a shift towards the message that 'pro-life is pro science.'

Though march organizers attempted to broaden their message to appeal to a bigger, non-partisan coalition, it was overshadowed by the surprise appearance of Vice President Pence and the second address to the rally by President Trump, this time by prerecorded video.

Mike Pence, who made a surprise appearance onstage at the rally, introduced the video, calling Trump, who before entering politics said he supported abortion access, 'the most pro-life president in American history.'

'I will always defend the first right in our Declaration of Independence, the right to life,' Trump said in remarks recorded in the Oval Office, a right he said extended to 'unborn children.'

His video remarks also went on to discuss making permanent the Hyde Amendment, a prohibition against federal funding of abortion services, continuing the denial of funds to global charities that support abortion and writing a letter to Congress stating he would veto any bill he deemed would weaken 'the protection of human life.'

Pence, with his wife Karen at his side, assured demonstrators: 'From the White House to your house, life is winning in America once again.'

Not everyone at the rally was happy with the political duo being so closely tied to the event, however.

'I think the most dangerous thing we ever did is make this a partisan issue,' said Destiny Herndon-De La Rosa, 35, president of New Wave Feminists to the Washington Post. 'It's a human rights issue.'

While she agrees with keeping the Republican party on the side against abortion, the activist was also concerned about the current administration's positions on otehr issues, asking 'What about children at the border? ... They're doing a lot of things that are anti-life.'

Other participants did not appear as impressed with the scientific approach of this year's march, as march attendee Alan Anderson told the Post that if science reached a conclusion other than 'a full-blown human being' at conception, he would still oppose abortion based on his religious faith.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
