«Breaking News» Tom Hardy admits he was a 'bog-standard alcoholic' his whole life

Tom Hardy has revealed he's been a 'bog-standard alcoholic' his whole life.

The Revenant star, who has been proudly sober now for over a decade, was addicted to booze and crack cocaine until his mid-20s and went to rehab in 2003.

The father-of-two, 41, has now admitted his past struggles helped him tap into the troubled psyche of his character in the new horror film Venom, in which he plays an investigative journalist whose body is invaded by an alien.

'I was a bog standard alcoholic my whole life,' he told Good Morning Britain's Richard Dawkins on Wednesday.

Tom's Jekyll and Hyde character, Eddie Brock, has violent instincts and feeds on a diet of human flesh after being taken over by the alien - but also desperately tries to restrain his gruesome desires.

And Hardy admitted that he can relate to the feeling of trying to keep yourself in check, saying: 'There were elements of that, like my inside voice.

'I can see the symbolism there, but I know that as a grown up and as a man I can't go out there and bite people's heads off.'

His reaction, he says now, was to think: 'Bang - I know where to find that now!' By the age of 13, he was on hallucinogens.

A couple of years later, he was expelled from his boarding school, Reed's, in Surrey, for stealing. By age 16, he was a mess of alcohol and crack cocaine, continually in trouble with the law, including being arrested for joyriding.

So badly affected was he that he once reportedly said: 'I would have sold my mother for a rock of crack.'

His drug and alcohol demons continued to plague him, until he collapsed after a crack cocaine binge in London in 2003 and was found lying in a pool of blood and vomit in Soho.

'That was a lesson to me,' he said later. 'In death, I was reborn.' He went to rehab and is proud to have been sober for over a decade.

He has since focused his restless energy on physical fitness - training with the Royal Marines as well as boxing and doing martial arts.

He admitted the addiction is never far away, telling the Daily Mirror: 'If I had four pints of lager and half a bottle of vodka I could turn this room into an absolute f**king nightmare in about three minutes. I could destroy everything in my life I have worked so hard for.'

Dark: 'His version of doing good is just eating,' Hardy said of Venom. 'The world is an all-you-can-eat buffet, and human beings are on the menu, so that's not great for humanity as your hero'

He now tries to help others as an ambassador for The Prince's Trust, but knows that the dangers of addiction never really go away.

'The only thing that saved me through that dark time was acting,' he told the Daily Mail. 'I originally got into it because I wanted to make my father proud of me.

'Because I was an only child, this was very important to me — and there wasn't very much of anything else that I could do.

'But acting was something I could do — and because I found that I was good at it, I wanted to make the effort to invest time and effort into doing it.

Tom is married to actress Charlotte Riley, who he has a two-year-old child with and is rumoured to be expecting a second child with. He also has a 10-year-old son Louis with his ex girlfriend Rachael Speed.

In Venom, he plays an investigative journalist whose body is invaded by an alien with violent instincts who feeds on a diet of human flesh.

It is a darker tale from the Marvel Comics superhero universe than what audiences have seen in recent films such as 'The Avengers' series released by Walt Disney Co.

'His version of doing good is just eating,' Hardy said of Venom. 'The world is an all-you-can-eat buffet, and human beings are on the menu, so that's not great for humanity as your hero.'

The story is a Jekyll-and-Hyde tale where Hardy's journalist character, Eddie Brock, tries to keep Venom's bad behavior under control.

Venom is being released by Sony Pictures, which owns rights to several Marvel characters that are not owned by Disney. Hardy said Venom has similarities to several classic monster movies.

'There's an element of original 'Ghostbusters,' a slightly '80s retro vibe to it, which I enjoyed, and a bit of 'Teen Wolf' and 'American Werewolf in London' vibe to it,' Hardy said.

The star said he also received input from son Louis on how to play the role.

'My son's a massive fan of Marvel and Venom, and he was very clear about what I can and can't do,' Hardy said at the movie's red-carpet premiere, adding 'It's very odd being told what to do by your son who's 10 and him being right.'

Venom co-stars fellow British actor Riz Ahmed as villainous corporation owner Carlton Drake and Michelle Williams as Brock's former girlfriend. It is the first time Oscar-nominated Williams has starred in a superhero movie.

The father-of-two, 41, has now admitted his past...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
