Man United's former head of recruitment Javier Ribalta has admitted he wanted to bring Emre Can to Old Trafford after he left Liverpool on a free transfer during the summer.
Ribalta regrets not being able to sign Can while working with Jose Mourinho and has also revealed he wanted to bring in Leon Goretzka, who left Schalke for Bayern Munich on a free.
The former chief scout left United during the summer and is now the sporting director at Russian side Zenit St Petersburg.

Speaking to Tuttosport, Ribalta said: 'For my time in Manchester, I was only there for a year but I'd have liked to sign Emre Can and [Leon] Goretzka on free transfers.'
Emre Can opted to join Juventus while Goretzka signed for Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.
However the German midfielder agreed to join Juventus before the end of his Liverpool contract, with clubs allowed to discuss a move abroad in the final six months of their deals.

Can thanked former boss Jurgen Klopp for his understanding and allowing him to continue playing despite being in his final year at the club.
'Not a lot of managers would let you play so many times when you are in the final year of your contract,' he told BBC Sport .
'My relationship with Klopp was always good. He wished me all the best when I told him I was leaving.
'But I always did my best. I always wanted to help the team. That is what he saw. That is why he kept faith with me.'
Ribalta also claims he almost signed Jose Gimenez for Juventus during his time there
Ribalta spent five years working at Juventus himself and claimed he was close to signing Atletico Madrid's prized asset in defender Jose Gimenez.
'Let's say that when he was still at Danubio, I came in too late,' he added.
And when questioned about whether Juventus could land any more big names following the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo, he said: 'Who is most feasible out of Pogba, Rabiot and Marcelo? Marcelo. The other two seem impossible to me.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
