The University of Maryland has come under fire for creating a 'safe space' discussion group for white students to talk about race.
The group was called White Awake and offered Caucasian students who wanted to learn how to become an 'ally to minorities' a place to share their feelings and thoughts.
It was immediately criticized after being advertised and has now been renamed to the 'anti-racism and ally group'.
The university conceded it made a mistake with the 'wording' of the group.
A flier for the group posed these questions:
The University of Maryland advertised the group in fliers around campus as a 'safe space' for White students
'Do you want to improve your ability to relate to and connect with people different from yourself?
'Do you sometimes feel uncomfortable and confused before, during or after interactions with racial and ethnic minorities?
'Do you want to become a better ally?'
It went on: 'This group offers a safe space for White students to explore their experiences, questions, reactions and feelings.
'Members will support and share feedback with each other as they learn more about themselves and how they can fit into a diverse world.'
Twitter critics were quick to slam the group, its name and its concept
It was immediately criticized by students who said they were 'ashamed' professors thought it was a good idea.
One wrote: 'I am ashamed over the execution of White awake and nor do I fully understand its clause.
'Why do they need to attend therapy sessions on how to be a decent human being in society? Why do they need to have these sessions to learn how to coexist?'
Noah Collins, the counselor who set it up, changed the name but stood by the concept.
'This is an incredibly difficult, nuanced issue, and that’s the reason we need to discuss it.
'The aim of this group is to help white students become more culturally competent, so they can better participate in creating a more inclusive environment at the University of Maryland,' he told Fox News.
The University did not respond to DailyMail.com when asked if it would only allow white students to attend the group.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
