«Breaking News» Top schools call for universities to end unconditional offers

Britain's leading private schools have urged universities to cut down issuing unconditional offers over fears that pupils will lose their motivation.

Independent schools in the country are calling for action after claiming that unconditional offers can have a dramatic impact on a student's A level performance and stop them from striving for a higher grade.

Mike Buchanan, the executive director of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference (HMC), made the calls after claiming pupils 'take their foot off the gas' after accepting unconditional offers.

The former headteacher of Ashford School in Kent said the offers were only justifiable in certain cases.

He told the Times newspaper: 'These youngsters have to carry their results with them for their whole careers.

'I am asking universities to stop using them unless they have interviewed the pupil and got some sense that it would be good for this pupil, or have consulted the school, which has given you the same information.'

The recent call from the association representing 285 private schools in the UK comes after a rise in university unconditional offers, which until recently was only issued to a small number of school-leavers.

Just this year, seven per cent of the 950,000 offers made were unconditional, according to UCAS, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service.

Data also shows 23 per cent are now receiving at least one unconditional offer from the universities to which they have applied,  marking a stark rise to the one per cent figure in 2013.

While the evidence showing that an unconditional offer having a detrimental impact on an pupil's overall grade is lacking, private schools have been become increasingly frustrated by the effects a student's grade has on their school's ranking.

Some employers have also argued that close attention is given to a graduate's  A-level grades.

However vice-chancellors have defended the use of the unconditional offers arguing it allows them to organise courses and accommodation.

In July, higher education minister Sam Gyimah, said that the rise in unconditional offers was 'completely irresponsible to students, and universities must start taking a lead by limiting the number they offer'.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
