Where you live can affect how happy you are.
And a recent study showed just that when it found that most people in West Virginia unhappy due to soaring rates of insomnia and depression.
A new review, compiled by WalletHub, determined the Mountain State as the worst when it came to several environmental, societal and personal well-being factors including adequate sleep rate, share of adults with depression and unemployment.
West Virginia was followed by states that fell mostly in the southern US: Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma - as well as Alaska in the northwest.
Hawaii, despite getting the worst sleep, took the top grade as happiest in the country.
Rounding out the top five were mostly in Middle America: Utah, Minnesota, North Dakota - and California on the west coast.
To reach its findings, WalletHub compared the states across three key dimensions: emotional and physical well-being, work environment, and community environment.
The study looked at several categories including adequate sleep rate, number of work hours, divorce rate and share of adults with depression.
After assessing each state's provisions, the researchers provided grades out of 100.
Hawaii earned a 68.27 out of 100 while West Virginia scored just 33.42 out of 100.
While Hawaii and California are known for their sprawling beaches and laid back lifestyle, the other states in the top five have other claims to fame.
The state that came in second, Utah, is known as being notoriously religious due to its high percentage of Mormons while Minnesota and North Dakota are both quite rural.
EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL WELL-BEING
New York and New Jersey came in first and second for the lowest share of adult depression, and inversely for lowest suicide rate. Meanwhile, Oregon had highest share of depression and Montana had the highest suicide rate
New York and New Jersey, neither of which were in the top 10, came in first and second as the states with the lowest share of adult depression.
The Big Apple's share of adult depression - at 11.70 percent - was close to two times lower than in Oregon, which had the highest at 25.54 percent.
New Jersey has the fewest suicide rate at seven per 100,000 residents - which was 3.7 times less than Montana, which had the most at 26.
According to a 2011 study, led by the University of Warwick in the UK, the 'happiest' states also tend to have the highest rates of suicide.
The researchers say this link, which seems counterintuitive, says a great deal about how humans rely on comparisons with others to determine their happiness.
'If humans are subject to mood swings, the lows of life may thus be most tolerable in an environment in which other humans are unhappy,' said University of Warwick Professor Andrew Oswald.
South Dakota came in first with the highest adequate-sleep rate while Hawaii, the generally happiest state, had the lowest adequate-sleep rate
One of the biggest differences also came in the number of adults who were getting adequate sleep every night.
Surprisingly, Hawaii was named as the state with the lowest adequate-sleep rate. Less surprisingly, West Virginia was the state with second lowest rate.
Midwestern and mountain region states were the most likely to get enough sleep every night with South Dakota coming in first.
It is well known that those who get less than the recommended eight hours of sleep each night are more prone to health issues.
More than one-third of American adults do not get enough sleep on a regular basis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
And this sleep deprivation can affect you in a number of ways, including a lack of alertness, impaired memory and mood regulation. Poor sleep has even been linked to heart and immune system problems.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Utah was found to have the fewest working hours while Alaska had the most. North Dakota meanwhile had 3.4 times the long-term unemployment rate than the state with the lowest rate, New Mexico
Many of the cities ranked as the unhappiest were those with the most work hours and longest rates of long-term unemployment.
Utah, which was ranked the overall second-happiest state, had the fewest work hours, while Alaska had the most.
Researchers have found that working long hours is linked to a multitude of ailments including heart disease, diabetes, stroke and mental health problems.
North Dakota came in first with the lowest long-term unemployment rate at 13.1 percent, which is 3.4 times lower than in New Mexico, which has the highest at 44.9 percent.
According to a paper published by the Harvard Business Review, high unemployment levels 'typically heighten people's sense of job insecurity, and negatively affect the happiness even of those who are still in employment'.
COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENT
Utah, the second overall happiest state, placed first when it came to the states with the highest volunteer rates and the lowest separation and divorce rates. Meanwhile, Florida had the lowest volunteer rate and Nevada had the highest divorce rate
The difference between the states with the highest and lowest volunteer rate and divorce rates was startling.
When it came to volunteer rates, the highest was found in Utah at almost 40 percent, which is more than two times higher in Florida, where the rate was more than 18 percent.
According to a paper published by Harvard Health, people who volunteer weekly experience the so-called 'happiness effect' - levels that compare to a salary boost.
The researchers also noted that volunteers often build social connections to help create a stronger community - which leads to a positive environment.
Utah was also found to have the lowest separation and divorce rate at 16.18 percent.
This is 1.6 times lower than in Nevada, which was found to have the highest separation and divorce rate at 26.57 percent.
An August 2017 study found that married people are 14 percent more likely to survive a heart attack than those who are single.
And last year, a study published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry found that marriage could help lower the risk of dementia.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
