Startling new research has found that Australians are more at risk of skin cancer than previously thought.
In the world-first findings, researchers found that Australians should be making sun screen a day-to-day necessity and not just an application needed solely for trips to the beach.
The research found the terrifyingly high UV output Aussies are exposing themselves to everyday and just how fast it takes to cause some serious damage to not only your skin, but your DNA.

Cities like Melbourne experienced a scarily low two days a year where there wasn't enough UV to get sunburnt (stock image)
The research, conducted by the Australian National University and New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmosphere Research, aimed to diminish the health agencies somewhat old-fashioned recommendations for sun protection- and that it did.
Right now we're told to protect our skin when the UV index reaches three or higher.
The index is calculated by international health agencies who measure the maximum intensity of the sun's radiation- which are usually at it's highest from 10am to 3pm.
But the results, which measured the average total UV output throughout the full day and even surprised the researchers.
Speaking to The Canberra Times, Robyn Lucas from ANU said that she was startled by the results, saying even though they'd gone to the World Health Organisation before on the issue, she's never had the numbers in front of her.
The UV measurements were conducted in the two dramatically different climates of New Zealand's South Island and Melbourne.
'Most people think if it's cold and they're covered, they're fine, but your face and hands are still exposed and those are the most common places for skin cancer' (stock image)
And the further north they went, the numbers got scarier.
'I would suspect there would be no days in Canberra [and most of Australia] where you can't get sun burnt,' Professor Lucas said.
Not only did the findings conclude the almost zero days of typically 'safe' exposure to UV- but also the very little time people had to protect their skin.
Professor Lucas said people with typical fair, European skin who were classified as 'type two' would take around 45 minutes to an hour to burn and even less for it to damage their DNA.
'Usually that kind of damage repairs itself before you burn, but the longer you're out, and the older you are, the less you can rely on that,' she said.
For people with extremely fair skin, such as redheads, the window became much shorter- taking only a mere 30 minutes to get sun burnt- and that's in the middle of winter.
'Most people think if it's cold and they're covered, they're fine, but your face and hands are still exposed and those are the most common places for skin cancer.' Professor Lucas warned.
The collected data is sure to shock not only Australians but health agencies who have long been complacent with the 'slip, slop, slap' message that is rolled out every summer.
The researchers want Australians to know it's important to understand that this message of a very summer-specific warning isn't the case anymore.
'Even if the UV index is low, if you're outside for more than 10 or 15 minutes...you're at risk.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
