«Breaking News» Gogglebox's June Bernicoff discusses life without late husband Leon

Gogglebox's June Bernicoff has revealed that watching the tribute episode of the show to her late husband of 57 years Leon was the start of her grieving process.

The television favourite, 81, recalled watching the show without Leon for the first time and seeing the tribute to him flash up on the screen, before turning to speak to him and realising he wasn't there.

June said that instead of speaking out loud to him, as she would have done previously, she mouthed the words 'Leon, they've dedicated the show to you' towards his empty chair, reports the Mirror.

She said: 'I looked over to his chair and when I saw it, that was the first time I really, really cried after he died.'

The programme aired two months after Leon had died aged 83, and before the show June was still coming to terms with her loss.

June admits in her new book, Leon and June Live Love and Laughter, that watching his tribute show was 'difficult', and the gesture from the producers caused an emotional release that marked the start of her grieving process.

Ahead of the show June sat in the chair she has always sat in, and poured a glass of wine, as she always used to do with Leon.

She said that people kept expecting her to burst into tears in the supermarket, but to June her grief was very private.

However sat there on her own watching the show, June remembers looking around and thinking that the camera crew that had filmed her and Leon's life for the past five years wouldn't be there again.

June continued: 'I remember taking the glass out and going in the dining room thinking, 'The sound desk won't be there and the monitors won't be there.

'The researcher won't be curled up in the armchair'. And I thought that had gone. It was a part of our lives. It was a chapter of our lives.'

Writing about that evening in her book Leon & June, she says: 'Until that evening, emotionally speaking, I'd almost been in a peculiar vacuum.

'It's hard to explain exactly why and maybe it only makes sense to people who have experienced that kind of loss.

June confessed that Leon had always said to her if he passed away first then she had to stay positive, adding that this is something she has done ever since.

June and Leon remained show favourites throughout their ten series stint on the programme, thanks to their affectionate relationship which viewers sometimes glimpsed in sweet moments.

Leon died in December last year following a short battle with pneumonia and sepsis, but June recalled his dry-wit right until the end.

Whilst waiting for hospital tests, June remembers him lying there while she said to him that he would be heading for more tests.

He quipped back in typical style that he had already told the doctors that there was more of his blood in the hospital than there was in him.

Following her husband's death, June went to spend time with her family in the Midlands, trying to adhere to Leon's mantra that she shouldn't cry over him.

She said that despite there age Leon never wanted to broach the topic of dying due to the seriousness that surrounds the idea of death.

However despite a difficult few months June said that she found comfort in people offering their condolences for her loss, especially that she had Leon had touched their lives enough for them to say something.

June continued by saying that she does she watch Gogglebox every week, as although she is no longer a part of the show she feels it is still a big part of her.

She believes that being in the show 'so late in life' brought so much unexpected pleasure.

The star said that she struggles to remember a time when Leon wasn't in her life, confessing that his generosity, kindness, laughter, decisiveness, his touch and his voice are what she misses most about him.

She added that she misses all the things they used to discuss, even the more heated debates.

However she insisted that staying on Gogglebox without him was never an option as it would never be the same, before cheekily adding, 'although I might get to speak more'.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
