«Breaking News» Faye Brookes and Gareth Gates SPLIT: Estranged couple look downcast

Faye Brookes and Gareth Gates were torn apart after nearly six years together when the singer's reportedly 'very controlling' behaviour led to a series of furious rows.

And the estranged couple were spotted together for the first time since news of their split was announced, as they took a walk in St Ann's Square, Manchester, on Friday.

The singer, 34, and actress, 31, looked downcast as they walked through the streets, keeping a respectable distance from each other while wearing matching outfits.

Faye shielded herself from the cool weather in a fluffy black jacket, which she wore over a matching mini dress.

The Coronation Street star slipped her svelte legs into tights, and accessorised with a black handbag, while she offset her dark attire with a pair of white heeled boots.

Her brunette locks were styled with a middle parting, and she let her hair tumble past her shoulder as she opted to wear a natural palette of make-up.

Keeping to the dark colour scheme, the Pop Idol star stepped out in black Chelsea boots and tried to keep a low profile in a pair of aviator shades.

He sported a close-cropped beard and styled his hair into a spikey up-do, while he offset his ensemble with a silver crucifix necklace.

MailOnline has contacted representatives for both Gareth and Faye for comment.

Their outing comes after it was reported by The Sun that the couple allegedly had volatile arguments over the soap star choosing to hit the town with her Corrie co-stars without her love.

Further claims on Tuesday suggested the singer struggled with boredom at times when he didn't share the same jam-packed schedule as his actress girlfriend.

An insider told the publication: 'At certain points in their relationship Gareth was very controlling.'

They continued: 'A lot of Faye's co-stars on Coronation Street have been concerned for her in the lead up to their split and are pleased she has been able to move on now.' 

'He wasn't always happy with Faye going on nights out with her friends from work without him which inevitably led to arguments between them.

'Gareth doesn't always have a busy schedule like Faye and can get bored when he's left to his own devices and it's during this time he would feel the need to call her phone more often.'

The whispers surrounding why the couple actually broke up emerged after Faye confirmed the pair were taking 'time apart' from each other. 

They have been together for nearly six years after meeting on a production of Legally Blonde in 2012.

Taking to their respective social media platforms, the duo both announced that they have decided to split but remain 'the very best of friends' on Monday.

Last year, Faye, who plays Kate Connor in the ITV soap, said she wanted to spend the 'rest of [her] life' with Gareth.

She told The Sun: 'We’ve talked about it. And that day will come, I’m sure of it, but that’s not for now. Every Valentine’s Day the conversation comes up. I’m like: "Listen, I’m totally career-driven," and he knows that.

'I’ve found the guy I want to spend the rest of my life with and if he does propose, then it’s going be a complete surprise.'

The actress has previously described Gareth as her 'best friend' and credited him with allowing her to 'not take life too seriously'.

She added: 'It was a real fairy tale - I totally believe in fate and that he was meant to walk into my life for a reason. He became my best friend and it blossomed into us becoming this unbelievable duo.' 

Gareth has a daughter, Missy, with ex-wife Suzanne Mole, who he married in 2008. The pair then split four years later before he and Faye fell for one another.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
